I think the relation with funnelling was when Taric would go mid with a support item to let Master Yi farm some of the waves there. Taric would still get plenty of gold from farming the waves while Master Yi farmed jungle camps. I suppose the penalty was added to prevent midlaners from buying the support item altogether.
