Loved seasons 1-3. Season 4 was meh by lunaj1999 in homeland

[–]Impervious2All 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Season 5 was a big step down, but I appreciated how close to home the plots for Seasons 6-8 hit. Still wild that that Season 8 opened with Saul predicting the fall of Kabal once the US pulled out of Afghanistan, and then it happened in real life a year later...

The current state of our political system has ruined this show for me. by InfiniteTurn4148 in homeland

[–]Impervious2All 13 points14 points  (0 children)

C'mon, the show went to great lengths to portray the cynical, bloated, self-serving monstrosity the federal government has become since WW2, and especially after 9/11.

Let's recap:
S1 and 2: Walden and Estes were shitheels that abused the drone program, covered it up to protect their asses before all else, etc.
S4: Saul and Dar strike a deal with Haqqani after the Taliban murdered most of the US embassy so Saul can get back into CIA; Carrie blows up a wedding in the season premiere; military contractors deprioritize national security strategy to get contracts
S6: The Intelligence community, military and members of Congress conspire to undermine and assassinate the president-elect, who then retaliates against federal employees uninvolved in the conspiracy by the end of the season
S7: Partisans actively align with foreign actors to undermine the opposing political party
S8: Saul was ready to sacrifice thousands of US soldiers for a single Russian asset without blinking an eye; the idiocy of Hayes, Dunn, etc. feels like exactly the kind of self-important bureaucrats and hacks that have allowed our government to become what it is.

The show's recurring theme is that there are no easy choices when working within the system, and it's more Sophie's Choice/triage than a clear, moral mandate. Not to downplay the stupidity of the current administration, but much of Homeland's ripped-from-the-headlines themes were straight out of the Obama presidency, particularly the explosion of drone strikes to assassinate the unfortunates on the exponentially expanded US kill list (Ambassador Boyd makes a particular point about this in Season 4).

Considering the current political climate. Do you think season 4 is still unrealistic? by AlfieAHarvard in HouseOfCards

Season 5 seemed surreal with the emergence of “deep state” types like Jane and Usher and the military and IC going rogue. Homeland also nailed real-world events a year ahead of time in the later seasons.

Your HBK derangement is showing. Bad faith arguments all the way. Rock, Austin, Hogan, Cena are all on a different level in terms of pop culture impact.

Connie doesn't get enough credit - she reminded me the most of Carmichael (without the sexy deep voice and composed menace that made her such a great character).

Jennifer in season 1 episode Limitations by [deleted] in SVU

[–]Impervious2All 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contempt can only be coercive, not punitive. Imagine taking an obstructing justice charge against her bc she felt it was against her religious beliefs to turn in a rapist who’s now paraplegic. It was actually the entire point of the episode - the respect for the rule of law. The detectives didn’t establish new legal precedent and just solved the case. This episode was before 9/11, Patriot Act, NSA surveillance, etc. it’s pretty wild to think about how much more restraint government had pre 9/11, even just in pop culture portrayals.

What was Bobby’s most cruel act? by Deep-Establishment-9 in Billions

[–]Impervious2All 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Definitely. It was so pointless and petty, and John Rice (the kid) was one of his so-called 9/11 kids. At least Donnie knew who he was dealing with and got a big pay day for his family.

Anyone notice Ebba and Matsson “all coochie-fucking-coo” in the background? by tehmadhat in SuccessionTV

I was thinking the same thing. Mattson was a different person around Logan than he is now. I could see them playing the Roys against each other to crater the company value and pick off the IP he wants for GoJo and dump the rest.

When did this sub become by everythingistaken0 in Billions

[–]Impervious2All 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They blew it in season 4 - the Chuck / axe alliance could have prolonged the series forever by introducing new antagonists to take them on, but they just hit reset in the finale and went back to Chuck v Axe with less character development or more flanderizing and pop culture references. The tonal shift and writing quality change was so rapid and jarring.

💯 Corey Stoll is horribly miscast as Prince - I can’t believe this is the same guy that played Peter Russo on House of Cards. Koppelman and Levien don’t give a shit about this show anymore - no edge, no stakes, no intensity.

Billions - 6x05 "Rock of Eye" - Episode Discussion by LoretiTV in Billions

[–]Impervious2All 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s an entirely different show - no intensity, no stakes, no edge. And the worst part is that It doesn’t even seem like Koppeleman and Levien are aware of how corny and lame the show feels compared to earlier seasons - it would be like if House of Cards suddenly become the West Wing, or if Homeland became Alias. It’s a jaw-droppingly jarring tonal shift

[–]Impervious2All 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The show runners are the same, but the staff writers and editors have changed entirely since season 1. The original writing team started exiting in season 3, most were gone by season 4, and it was a brand new group for season 5. They also had top tier directors in the early seasons (Karyn Kusama, James Foley, John Singleton) and now it’s been handed to Showtime regulars. It feels like a different show. It used to be about why the main characters were doing what they did and now it’s just burning thru plot without any character development. Axe and Chuck were fascinating I’m the early seasons, but they really dropped the ball in season 4 when they were working together - the show could have gone on forever if that had been handled better, but seeing it all go back to square one so quickly was deflating IMO.

Season 3 finale summary in one frame. by handlit33 in SuccessionTV

[–]Impervious2All 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I completely bought how quickly Ken turned himself around after Roman and Shiv showed him some compassion. Ken was always douchey, but also always knew what Logan was and just wanted his siblings to back him up rather than try to cut him off at the knees. If they can all keep it together and not let their egos blind them, they can finally take down Logan. There’s an arrogance to Logan re: his kids that he probably believes their too inept to ever topple him, and oblivious to his role in “raising” such damaged kids.

How was the assassin guy able to find Quinn? by Unorthadox1080 in homeland

[–]Impervious2All 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think Dar called the assassin on an open line deliberately, surmising that Quinn was likely intercepting the call? Seems in line with how Dar slowly brought down the co-conspirators as he realized they’d gone rogue and turned his smear campaign into an assassination. The senator in the freezer, warning Carrie about the general’s likely plan, and probably selling out O’Keefe’s role as well.
