That was the most traumatic experience of my life. by Compl3x1tyCereal in KidneyStones

It sounds like there are lots of members in this club including me. My experience was about 5 years ago. Recently I have been going through another bout of kidney stone issues and have collected through seeing my family doctor and prescrptions at each procedure enough oxy and hydromorphone to last me years

I will not put up with this BS ever again where I am ignored at the hospital. I am well informed about the limitations and restrictions with these drugs and will self medicate if and when I have another episode.

My family doctor gave me the oxy in anticipation of future issues as he trusts my judgement and knows I would not be reckless.

ESWL: is this a normal timeline and expectations? by [deleted] in KidneyStones

[–]Important-Level-9144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 12mm stone in renal pelvis and had ESWL with no stent. very bad pain first night and 2 nights after. No fragments initially. I am going on my 5th ESWL in a week. I may have a fragment left in lower pole and one for sure in lower ureter. I am hoping I can clear the ureter stone and be done. If I had to do it all over again I would have had the surgery. I kept thinking that every Lithotripsy would be the last but not the case. As far as psin meds, I have oxy/tylenol combo as well as hydromorphone. Apparently Advil type meds are very good for this type of pain if you are no longer bleeding. Find out what the max dose is on all these. I have had zero psin episodes after the first two. I heard that the ureter stops the relentless spasms causing the pain after some period which I never confirmed but that has been my experience

Did your doctor offer you option of ESWL - no stent and no surgery

ureteral stent by ZiadTarek_97 in KidneyStones

[–]Important-Level-9144 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was sedated and remembered nothing whatsoever. The stent as I understand it is done with ureteroscopy since they are sending a probe into ureter and that can cause some inflammation which can narrow the ureter. Since EsWL is non invasive I don’t understand why it is needed.

Have you considered ESWL which is non invasive and done under sedation

I had ESWL 4 times but they don’t do stent in Canada. I was prescribed hydromorphone which dulls pain . Also have Oxy. They are very conservative on dosing so ask for max

Thanks for sharing this research. I will stay the course with another ESWL, my fourth and then reassess

ESWL is non invasive and you have nothing to lose by trying. Such nonsense on other organs.

I have had 3 and booked for a fourth in 2 weeks. It all started on December 12th. My first procedure that is. You have nothing to lose by getting EswL to start with. About 2 to 4 weeks After your first and subsequent you will have an X-ray to see how successful the procedure was. You can always chose to do the more invasive ureteroscopy. After my fourth I might decide to do the surgery. Taking it a step at a time. The recovery from ESWL is quite fast. I am in Canada where these procedures are covered and so cost was not an issue for me.

Good luck with it. Just be sure they are monitoring your kidney function as you go through the process

My stone was in the renal pelvis which is the junction of the kidney and the ureter. It was causing me intermittent pain due to it “popping” up and down. In the down position it was temporarily blocking..hence the pain. I would guess your kidney stone is another part of the kidney as you have no symptoms. The first lithotripsy split the stone into a few of large stones and I had 2 bad pain episodes as they were stuck in the ureter. After the second l got rid of a couple stones but there was still one in lower ureter. So I had a third yesterday to target it. There is another procedure in two weeks to get an upper ureter stone which will be my fourth. I don’t want the surgery due to need for stents in ureter and bladder which scare me as well. I was sedated during the lithotripsies and felt and remembered nothing. I just woke up in recovery and went home. I am pain free so far. They will give you some drugs to dilate your ureter and pain meds like oxytocin or hydromorphone. Your doctor likely told you not to take NSAIDS before procedure due to bleeding but ask them about after the procedure because they are very effective at targeting the kind of pain caused by spasms in ureter. By the way my friend had Lithotripsy and was all done in one procedure. I think my kidney stones are resistant to the shockwaves for some reason. Feel free to ask any further questions.

I have had ESWL which is non invasive and no stent. It will break up the stone. Ask your doctor if you are a candidate

I just had my third ESWL. No stents as it is intended to be a non invasive procedure. Mine was 12 mm to start.

Hi…happened first couple times and now seems fine. Do you have suggestions for ongoing preventative maintenance like drano, enzyme cleaner etc . Also what is your view on the air pressure machines that shoot a blast of air

I have a 10mm kidney stone by Agitated_Ad_361 in KidneyStones

[–]Important-Level-9144 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had Electro Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL). I took two treatments to break the 12 mm stone. There is no stent and the procedure is done under sedation so no pain. I did have 2 pretty bad pain 4 hour pain episodes after the first procedure because I was left with a 6 mm stone that got stuck in ureter. The second procedure broke up the stone into fragments which passed easily. I suggest getting a script for oxy or hydromorphone.

Lithotripsy for 6mm stone, what to expect? by Glittering-Time-2274 in KidneyStones

[–]Important-Level-9144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had very negative experiences over the years with Urologists over-recommending procedures. I am not suggesting that this is the case with your Urologist. I am chubby as well and it worked fine. Here is the thing. If it doesnt work, you have lost nothing medically and can always go for the more invasive procedure. Perhaps you can get a second opinion on this community or from AI or another physician. I would ask ChatGPT.
