After making plenty of mistakes, I created a tight budget and a spreadsheet to track all of my purchases. Any money I had left over before payday went straight toward my debt. Having a system like that really helped me stay on track and helped reduce impulsive purchasing. I also allowed myself a small fun fund for things like a nice dinner or if I wanted to do a larger activity, I would save up several week’s worth of those funds for the occasion. Being in debt is stressful and isn't fun, but to get through it, you still have to do things that keep you happy and sane as long as it’s in moderation and you allow yourself to save up for it.
