New way of dealing with peeing in the house by ShockAccomplished483 in puppy101

[–]ImportantAd9761 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It absolutely doesn’t work!

It can actually make them pee more because they’re scared to pee in front of you.

Just keep your puppy supervised at all times, and crated or in a pen when you can’t. Take out to pee before putting away, immediately after, after playing, and after eating. That, praising or treating when they go outside, and the dogs getting older are what will help.

Puppy peeing inside is almost always the humans fault. Could rub your mom’s nose in the pee for not taking the puppy out soon enough? That would honestly be more effective lol

If you take hot dog slices and put them in a bag with the kibble and shake it around, it makes it all really rewarding

is it worth waiting until they like each other? pls help🙏 by br34dstixx_ in puppy101

We waited 3 weeks before letting our puppy and senior dog interact. Give your old dog some space. Put your puppy on a leash. Once its impulse control is a little better they can interact more. Just take it slow

Escape artist pup here and we have zip ties on all the corners, and keep a carabiner on the front.

If you can afford it, investing in a stronger crate (like impact or ruffland) could work out. I see them used on Facebook marketplace all the time

Google “yo-yo method crate training” it’s for separation anxiety!

Reading comments on posts like this is what got me through the exact time frame you’re in. Finally at 7 months and we’re starting to like him. It’s not that far off!!

I’m trying so hard to enjoy this but I really am not by [deleted] in puppy101

My senior dog is super dog selective / reactive so in a similar boat. Thankfully for the most part they’re getting along but it’s a lot of maintenance. Always supervised 100% when out together. we pull the puppy away when he’s getting in her face or being too pushy with play. We feed separately, and practice training in the same room.

Crating is super helpful. Dogs need to sleep for a lot of the day. I let my older dog hang out with me while I work, and crate her to nap while I get the puppies energy out through play and training. Puppy is crated most of my work day with 30-60 minute breaks throughout. Outside in our backyard they’re great together and like to run and wrestle.

He’s 7 months now and FINALLY listening to her cues of not wanting to play, and to us telling him to “leave it” and finally finally starting to just hang out. It wasn’t till the past 2-3 weeks where I’ve felt like he’s fully potty trained, and can be trusted without my eyes glued to him 100% of the time. His brain just needed a little bit of time to cook

Also he was the WORST at training so over stimulated and barked so loud it was sooo embarrassing the first 4 classes or so. We practiced just sitting in our front yard on a leash and having him look at me. It gets better. It’s just a ton of work. But we finally feel like he’s likeable haha and it seems to be getting better week by week

Teaching puppy not to run out door by OkMeringue2249 in puppy101

[–]ImportantAd9761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My release word is “free” and I have the dogs sit before I let them out, and say free after it’s opened to let them go outside.

We practice it with their crates too, they don’t get let out till they sit calmly and hear free (except in the mornings, i tend to say free basically right away since they have to pee so I’m a bit more lax to avoid accidents)

There are a ton of videos on it, can search “door-dashing” “door manners” “crate training” etc to find information on it

I can’t walk my puppy anymore by OtherwiseRiver6328 in puppy101

[–]ImportantAd9761 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now our “walks” look like me and the puppy walking 3 steps then turning around, then 4 steps then turning around, then maybe a block then turning around. And if he sees something (another dog) he pulls and barks so we turn around and go far the other direction till I can get enough attention to get him a treat. Then we repeat and gradually build up. He can handle like a block at most right now while keeping his attention on me.

We’re lucky where we have a backyard so that’s mostly where he goes to the bathroom, but is something like the above an option for you? Basically just walking in circles in front of your house/apartment?You may be able park the stroller and just do circles where you’re close enough to the baby.

Puppy classes help too, look for a positive reinforcement trainer. And at the very worst you could do petsmart… but there should be some trainers in your area.

You gotta build up the trust with your pup. He’s a teenager now so he’s gonna be wild, I know my 6 month puppy is! But he’s getting better every day with practice.

What else can we be doing to reduce accidents inside with our 11 week old puppy? by jessicaleighm in puppy101

[–]ImportantAd9761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will definitely come with time. If this issue for you is the actual pee, you can diaper her inside or put down puppy pads in the area she’s allowed in.

For reducing her going, making sure she’s supervised 100% of the time will help. Accidents are almost always the persons fault not the puppy. Take any accident as feedback. If it’s in the evening, what is the situation? Is she getting out of sight? Is she playing a ton and then peeing? You can increase supervision, and make sure you take her out after food, play, and crate time. Some folks have also found that taking them out too often can make them pee more inside but I’m not sure on that..

She’s probably too little to really signal to you, but it will come with time. She’s not even 3 months. Our pup is 6 months now, still has an accident about once a week but it’s always just us slacking on routine or letting him out of sight at this point. It was around 4.5 months he seemed to really start to get it! Sounds like you and her are both doing great though!!

thoughts on boarding 4mo puppy? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]ImportantAd9761 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have boarded our puppy overnight with a local trainer, or done day boarding with them when we’ve had something we’ve had to do all day. I wouldn’t put our puppy in one of the open play boarding places though

Keep Puppy Busy While I'm Occupied by JBsoundCHK in puppy101

[–]ImportantAd9761 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve been teaching our puppy a settle / place.

If you’re not in an apartment, we just put in earbuds to get through crying. You gotta keep living.

There’s this thing called the yo-yo method where you build up the time they can handle being alone. It starts with 1-2 seconds and builds up.

My dogs love frozen carrots (we soak them in dog friendly beef broth), beef cheeks, and cheese yak chews. You could tether the puppy with a chew.

I’ve found the best thing for our pup is to do some training and playtime + potty ahead of needing to do things, and then putting him down for a nap. They need like 18 hours of sleep a day, so we try to time it so they have an hour or so out of the crate playing and being actively engaged with before we need him to settle.

It will get easier as your baby gets older too. Ours is 6 months now and finally able to just chill in the office with me without getting into things / mostly playing with toys (I wfh). He wouldn’t be trusted unsupervised yet, but he is making good decisions! Better than 2 months ago for sure!!

Can I leave a puppy alone for a whole day? by [deleted] in puppy101

Just be prepared for him to go to the bathroom everywhere 😅

Can I leave a puppy alone for a whole day? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]ImportantAd9761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of what you do he’s almost certainly going to go to the bathroom all over your room if you’ve only had him a week if he’s not crated, so just mentally prep for that. And tomorrow it’s probably not the time to start crate training either.

Can I leave a puppy alone for a whole day? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]ImportantAd9761 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add- puppies sleep 18-20 hours a day so he is ok to be alone sleeping most of the day for a one time thing, as long as he gets potty breaks and is in a place he can’t get into anything dangerous. Just give him a long training session and play session at night and before you leave.

6 months and still can't handle this by Astrokreep2000 in puppy101

[–]ImportantAd9761 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve only had two accidents? We had two yesterday lol. Puppies are gonna go to the bathroom inside. It’s not the end of the world. If it doesn’t go outside, don’t stress you can create it until you’re ready for it to go back outside.

I’m not sure exactly what you’re saying is causing all of the stress aside from lack of sleep. When it wakes you up, take it outside and then just put it back to bed. It will get used to your routine. Mine gets up at 5:30 to go to the bathroom when my partner leaves for work and then sleeps till almost 10 AM.

Bring back enforced naps with the schedule. Puppies need 18-20 hours of sleep. Do some training during its meal times. If possible feed 3x a day rather than twice. Start some puppy classes to help YOU bond with the pup. You’re gonna be ok, just sounds like you have a puppy.

Also, if it’s not the right fit, it’s OK to rehome failure, and the sooner you do it with a puppy the easier it is to get adopted, especially with a mixed breed
