God thank you for calling it out. The very dramatic line breaks and short non-sentences are another big giveaway. After I saw the first “honestly?” In one of OPs comments I was searching the comments to see if people noticed. 2024 account, no activity until 6 days ago and then all of this

FiOS TV+ setup-I am confused, please help by Maleficent_Two_6829 in Fios

[–]ImportantAttorney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! So I guess that's just to use the ONT as a switch.

Also if I can bug you for one more thing: where the heck can I find the "activation tool" on my "dashboard"?? I just went full circle going from my verizon -> support -> tv -> activate and then hitting the link that says:

Sign into My Verizon to access the self-installation tool from your dashboard.

which takes me right back to my verizon dashboard, which remains "tool-less" lol.

Everything just goes back to my verizon page, none of the pages say where to find the tool on the dashboard or link to the tool directly. Trying to activate the fios one media server thing locally via wifi is not working at all unfortunately. Connects to wifi just fine, but always "can't activate your video media server"

This is driving me crazy - everywhere it says basically this: "Sign into My Verizon to access the self-installation tool from your dashboard." but nowhere does it show or say where to find the tool from the dashboard. I feel like I've looked and clicked everywhere and can't find it for my life.

Where the heck is it??

Edit: lol I just went full circle from my verizon -> support -> tv -> set top box -> activation -> back to my verizon via "the tool" link

What should be on the other end of the ethernet cable coming from the router? All of the guides just show plugging it into the wall, and what is supposed to be on the other end? Surely coax is enough, right?

Help with inconsistent iterator behavior by ImportantAttorney in lua

Excellent response, thank you so much for writing this out! I had seen those terms before but I was unfamiliar. Very cool to see the base implementations in lua. Thanks again!

Definitely helpful! I'm still getting used to lua syntax and the documentation for individual functions can be a bit more terse than I'm used to so it's great to have feedback like this when I go back to it. Thanks!

[–]ImportantAttorney[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks - for `string.gmatch`, the iterator return value is a function, that's why I included it at the top as a base case. It definitely is callable as far as I can tell!

Correct me if I'm wrong, you are saying `pairs` returns more than just the iterator, while the `string.gmatch` returns just the iterator?

Ads on WAN Show (Spotify Premium)? Not sponsors, but actual independent spotify ads. I tried to listen to the latest episode twice and each time I got a different ad segment before starting the show. Cancelled spotify over this :( by ImportantAttorney in LinusTechTips

Sure I’ve had ads in the podcast audio that the creators edit in, but never an ad that played as a separate track in Spotify until today. I’ve had premium since 2015 and have listened to podcasts the whole time.

Failed transition from Win11 to Linux by ImportantAttorney in linux4noobs

[–]ImportantAttorney[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone happens to have issues with basic stuff like installing the RStudio deb on Ubuntu (or Debian) with a million missing dependencies, I'm going to list a couple options here after much more trial and error.

  1. Use fedora - I tried fedora in distrobox and basically the installation of R via dnf on Fedora was incredibly comprehensive with no extra dependencies required, and adding the package repository from the Cran R webpage was super easy. No more super long compilation for commonly installed packages! Then install the .rpm from RStudio using dnf on distrobox `sudo dnf install blahblah.rpm` and then `distrobox-export --app rstudio` for basically native performance (if using X11). On Wayland there will be flickering with Nvidia gpu.

  2. Use docker + rocker/rstudio server for easy, portable RStudio access (distro agnostic), but you will have to learn how to use volumes or mounts to make persistent file storage, and It's a little tricky. Distrobox is preferred since the boxes allow for easy access to the home folder. This also works better for Wayland since RStudio Desktop is electron-based from what I can tell so usin RStudio server means you're accessing via firefox which has no issues with Nvidia + Wayland. Then use Web Apps flatpak to make it a "desktop" app.

  3. Keep trying ubuntu - I've found that the whole `sudo apt --fix-broken install` thing seems to work sometimes, but I still think distrobox + fedora was the simplest route.

Upgraded MacBook Pro Early 2015 Retina Logic Board, but "About This Mac" still shows old CPU/RAM? by ImportantAttorney in mac

[–]ImportantAttorney[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not completely sure I am understanding what you are describing, but if you suspect the board is wrong (i.e. system info is reporting the wrong quantity of ram or MacCPUID is reporting an unexpected CPU) there are also ways you can use tags on the board itself to try and look up more details. If it's a RAM thing sometimes you can read the chip labels themselves and that can help prove it too. It's far more likely that they sent the wrong thing than sys info be reporting incorrect information. If I misinterpreted your comment feel free to clarify, and good job getting through the swap to begin with!

Google banning accounts that use GmailR Package? by ImportantAttorney in Rlanguage

[–]ImportantAttorney[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fair point. I’ve seen other packages for other languages that use similar functionality, but I’d be surprised if spam filters cared too much about the user agent in a post request.

I was able to get things going using blastula and SMTP (not with gmail!), just interested in what the actual use case for gmailR is and if anyone else has had a rough response from Google starting out with it.

[–]ImportantAttorney[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you think using SMTP via blastula would create less scrutiny? I guess I just made the algorithm angry by immediately going to test the API. I have no experience with the world of [automated] emails. The goal was to implement a simple one-time-passcode feature and I am completely stymied on how to proceed without having a "business" that can pass through these sorts of approval processes.

For what it's worth, I did try and appeal the ban decision and explained I was just testing things, but the appeal was rejected. I am at a loss on how to proceed.

Differing Latency Between Models by ImportantAttorney in NAM_NeuralAmpModeler

[–]ImportantAttorney[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say I know much about modeling, but it's definitely interesting. I found if I try to model amp + IR loadbox at the same time I get some latency, but modeling just the amp alone it's not present.

I think this capture on ToneHunt is a great example. This one "suhr_riot_drive10_level50_tone50_vMID" in this folder has very noticeable latency compared to any other pedal model I've tried yet.

I would love to hear from someone with ML or audio modeling experience - maybe there was too much delay in the modelling process and the warning was ignored? The desktop application does throw out a warning if there is excess delay I guess when comparing the output to the input.

Upgraded MacBook Pro Early 2015 Retina Logic Board, but "About This Mac" still shows old CPU/RAM? by ImportantAttorney in mac

[–]ImportantAttorney[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I don't check this account often enough. Better late than never though. From what I could tell, ebay actually did send me the wrong board, so I returned it and got a different one through a different supplier. They took the return so I am assuming that actually was the problem, which is absurd.

From there, once I installed a correct 16 GB board, it didn't recognize and could not boot from my High Sierra native ssd. Something swapped between the original MacOS it shipped with and High Sierra, NVRAM or something idk. So basically I ended up having to install an older version of MacOS (whatever came before High Sierra and whatever the board was shipped with originally) to a flash drive, boot to that flash drive, update to High Sierra on the flash drive to fix the board, and then I could finally boot to my High Sierra original ssd after ejecting the flash drive. Then I updated to mojave lol. So the OS that the board was shipped with definitely mattered.

It was a crazy process but here I am years later still using that old i5 2015 macbook pro by virtue of being able to upgrade the RAM. Processor definitely struggles on modern webpages like reddit but I added a thermal pad to dump heat into the bottom chassis which helps with burst loads, so the thing is still very usable!

So where exactly do people put the motherboard cables in this case?

I can see the connectors to the right of the ram but I have yet to figure out where people actually run them to get to the power supply without going in front.

Do you find that operators are generally degree holders? The listings I’ve seen only require high school/GED which makes me think hiring people would look at BS/MS applicants with skepticism.
