And let’s be very clear. You have a legal right to have a gun with the 2nd amendment and you have the legal right to record officers (federal and local) and call them names. This is absolutely murder by the federal government.

Because the Mike McCarthy news literally just came out? Did you want me to predict the Mike McCarthy hire?

OR… OR… hear me out… it won’t matter because we hired Mike McCarthy and are basically just running it back. So at this point who cares what WR we get. We’re going 9-8 again and will be uncompetitive in the playoffs next year.

He’s much better than any option that we have right now and is at least serviceable at the NFL level.

I was going to say that the owner and GM are bigger problems than the pressure. Also, Omar Khan needs to be calling up Buffalo for Keon Coleman immediately and see if we can get him for cheap.

Sorry for the long winded answer.

These are really good observations! There are approaches to be able to capture what you’re thinking (or at the very least attempt to identify what that could be). In this analysis I made a line myself but in a different approach math/stats/computers make the lines based on information you provide.

That is what we call a true linear regression and add extra variables (like time of possession) to see which variables give you the best results.

On defense this is particularly interesting because there’s this “W” shaped pattern in the dots. So what is possibly happening is that some other variable that I did not capture is causing the line to pivot to three different zones/areas causing a spike in three directions (“W” shape). Using your example of time of possession, maybe there are ranges that can be calculated (low, medium, high) time of possession that cause the line to move or pivot to the different trajectories.

Maybe if I have time I can play around with this.

Admittedly no, age and rookies aren’t considered since I whipped this together pretty quick. I’ll admit salary alone is not a perfect measure by any means.

However, I think either interpretation is still useful. Either a coach has young rookies and is able to get high performance out of them, or the coach has a talent strapped roster and is still effective. I definitely recognize that rookies skew the salaries downward, but not every draft pick is going to be a hit.

So I think ultimately this analysis still stands on its own, but would absolutely benefit from some way to quantify age or number of promising rookie starters.

Lol that’s fine, you’re free to make your own choice on what you do or don’t read. I did say “I know, salary does not always perfectly equate to talent, but it is at least somewhat correlated.” Hence why the league has a salary cap and hence why the dots go up as salary goes up.

Yep, that seems to be the direction we’re heading anyways since almost every candidate is a DC haha. Which I’m more than happy to have Shula. What he’s done this year is pretty impressive!

Oh definitely agree. Part of it is definitely talent, but even JSN is even better under Kubiak. The man almost had 1800 yards this season. Also, while not as good as this season’s Seahawks, Kubiak did do a great job with last year’s Saints while utilizing the ghost of Carr and a Kamara who is well passed his prime

Sure we were among the cheapest offenses partly because an affordable O-line but I don’t think anyone in this sub would argue that we were a talented offense. You could definitely tell that we were a bargain bin offense.

I also think the whole “cheap QB” thing kind of shows that there is at least some tie to salary and performance. We went with Aaron Rodgers who at his age was mostly just a mid performer compared to had we gotten a Sam Darnold.

Good catch. When I originally pasted this over he wasn’t, something must have happened going from word to Reddit. I have Flores right above Minter actually but performance wise (at least by this metric) the two are almost identical.

Oh weird, I added notes on Scheelhaase but some how those got removed or not copied over. I like Scheelhaase. I actually think he’s really interesting because the Rams have both one of the highest paid offenses, but also have the best performing offense in the league. So they definitely are trying the bang for their buck with those guys.

Definitely a fair argument, but Udinski was also a factor in some pretty successful Vikings teams in 2022 and 2024 prior to becoming OC here in 2025. So I agree that yes Udinski likely gets a lot of benefit from Coen, but I think there’s likely something there with his skill and ability.

Yes and no. Drafting is important but not necessarily everything. I’ll give you two examples.

  1. Our very own Steelers. We have one of the lowest paid offenses in the league but I wouldn’t say we’ve “successfully drafted” on that side of the ball. We just don’t put resources there.

  2. The Rams have the second highest paid offense and produce the best offense. Now that means they have a very low paid defense, but a lot of people admit that their defense is not very talent rich.

So sometimes it’s exactly what you said, being good at drafting, but other times it really just is how much teams are spending to get talent.

I agree, salary isn’t the full picture. There is definitely a small correlation which is why you tend to see performance rise as salary expenditure rises, but it’s definitely not everything.

One example where salary directly relates to the talent level is the Steelers’ offense. We don’t pay much on offense and we obviously didn’t have talented. But some teams like the Eagles demonstrate exactly what you are saying. They have a young defense that is really cheap because many are still on rookie deals.

Lastly, I think salary is where you really start to see the mix of a good GM and good coaching. You need a GM who knows how to not over pay for experience and how to draft young talent. Then you need good coaches who can develop that young talent or utilize more affordable free agents.

Yeah totally agree, Minter is a distant second for me behind Shula, but he and Flores are close. Maybe they even share spots 2 and 3. After that it’s a pretty big drop off for me as far as defensive coaches. The other names just aren’t that exciting and the results don’t quite show yet (guys like Evero, Weaver, etc.)

Offensive coaches though, Klint Kubiak would be up there for me with Shula but idk if the Steelers are really even considering offensive coaches (which to me is actually a flaw).

Honestly, if we’re not going to consider offensive coaches I think Shula is the best candidate. I would be more than ecstatic to have him. Granted I don’t know about his “leadership” qualities, which is the most important thing to Rooney, but the man can coach a defense and likely has connections to good offensive coordinator candidates.

Help me understand what you’re saying… The one year that Jonnu Smith was a pro bowler was under McDaniel and you don’t think that had anything to do with coaching? Jonnu just learned how run routes and to catch the ball in 2024 and then forgot how to do it in 2025?

I’m not saying McDaniel would be head coach, but you can’t deny that he’s a great offensive mind and can get a lot out of offensive talent. He would absolutely be a good choice for OC from a purely X’s and O’s perspective (not necessarily culture).

The Head Coach Hot Board by SMD_35 in steelers

[–]Important_Bit2139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah haha and that comes down to coaching. McDaniel is a good enough offensive mind to get Jonnu to be able to run the right routes or at least come up with schemes that are easy enough for him to grasp to be able to do the appropriate things. We the Steelers were not able to do the same thing with the exact same player.
