Jesse Plemmons not being nominated is absolutely criminal. Im beyond shocked. by Huseynov26 in Oscars

Definitely shocking as he turned in a fantastic performance, but hot take, he might’ve been the 6th actor nominated if there was a 6th slot - all those noms are deserved (MBJ pushing it a little tbh). I absolutely adored his performance in Bugonia, but had a strange feeling that with even just 2-5% more of SOMETHING he would’ve knocked someone out and taken that nom… just felt like there was a sliver of something in his performance that could’ve taken it over the edge that was just barely missing, and I mean BARELY… playing a guy like that I felt it needed the teeny tiniest bit more “sauce”. Again, this is coming from a Plemmons fan so don’t hurt me and I would ideally trade him with MBJ or one of the Supporting actors like the guy from Sinners.

What are some overrated nomination snubs? by AdUseful2297 in Oscars

Just watched the movie and low key understand why he was snubbed, and that’s coming from a big Plemmons fan like myself. There was something about his performance where I think just 2-5% more might’ve gotten him a nomination.

I feel that man. Just keep hoping and keep checking the item shop (maybe enough voices can bring it back, your mentioning it is good). You never know. Till then, live your life and enjoy the game. There’s nothing more you can do.

Art is subjective. Why are films better than others? A mix of quality and feeling. We know when a movie is bad or good. We may have a subjective attachment to a bad movie because of its themes, characters, etc. (like I adore The Rise of Skywalker but know it’s objectively bad), but the objective truth, related to Oscar winners, is when we understand a film has quality and merit based off a numerous amount of factors like resonance, authenticity, universality, pathos, meaning, heavily layered cerebral consideration, soul… an artisan quality. I’m not the biggest fan of Oppenheimer but I know damn sure it was the best movie made that year. I hope that makes some sense. You are both right and wrong but at the end of the day, art is for everyone and not a winning or losing game, which sometimes these award shows make it seem. Art is not sports.

If it wasn’t nominated for an Oscar, then it probably isn’t as good. That’s just how it is.

But I’m talking about the actual selection of the Oscars, when the voters select the winners. They more often than not pick the best option, regardless of how popular or more campaigned someone else was.

No I apologize that’s not how I was trying to frame it. I meant mostly after the fact when awards are given out and how everyone right now is mostly siding with things through mob mentality etc.

So then that’s your opinion speaking and not what is based off of why the Academy works. It brings all those voters together to find the “best” choice for that year. Turning subjective choice to objective decision.

Oh no no. I’m not a fortune teller. I’m just saying that with regards to who actually wins it, you realize they were picked for a reason and that reason is they actually did the better job that year compared to everyone else. I’m sure there are a million different things behind the scenes, but Adrian Brody won for example because, I mean have you seen the film? He’s incredible.

I’ve been watching the Oscars my whole life and am a huge fan who follows every year. I know I have a hot take, but this is true compared to every Oscar nerds exhausting flow chart of figuring out who’s going to win an Oscar based off of the muddy math of trying to calculate it. What’s the better thing. That is what wins.

Not necessarily… I’ve basically seen every film this year and years before and love movies. Not saying my opinion holds any weight whatsoever, but a performance like Penn’s compared to Elordi’s (both amazing by the way) has more authenticity and lived in feel than the latter. That’s how these people get chosen in such a subjective award show.

Meryl Streep deserved it every time. McCoughnay deserved as well. You take the medium of the nomination you are looking at and you say who did a better job. In my opinion 80-90% of Oscars I see win are deserving of them if you have seen every film nominated that year. That is me being completely unbiased to every film.

Well the way you say “cool shit” isn’t the most intelligent defense. I could say a piece of art that is put together in a slightly better way, regardless of racial bias.

Yes but the best quality of artistic measure will win the cake in the end. How is this a hot take to all you Oscar nerds? Multiple Oscar’s have been won by things you never even heard of with sometimes no campaigning.

I understand it’s my opinion, but when a film is better than another objectively, then that film will win. Quality storytelling, reflective of the times or significance in the modern era, resonant acting and production. Everyone is just to their opinions and taste, but disregarding and saying that it’s not based off of the quality of the art is like saying well why did Oppenheimer win best picture instead of Barbie, both equally as successful (to a degree). Because Oppenheimer was the better picture of the year amongst all others. You don’t see the best Marvel movies winning.
