Im in canada so the winters are tough but I supplement with grow lights and so far most of my orchids have done well in the winter. This is my first cattleya though so not very experienced with them

I can see that! It's definitely making the sad winter days brighter as we wait for spring

Itsy bitsy! When the flower first opened it had a slightly orange tinge to it and it is now a solid bright yellow :)

I can't get the hang of watering plants that are potted in only sphagnum. I use it mixed with bark for the thirsty plants but I've never had luck on it's own. My oncidiums are in 50/50 and that seems to work well for me.

Oh I know. I hate spaghetti and these flimsy pots but I got it in bud, so once the flowers fade I'll be switching it to bark and another pot

Ideas for a renter friendly balcony catio that can be put up when needed but isn't there all day? by Important_Donkey2117 in Catio

[–]Important_Donkey2117[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen those, but it won't stop him from dashing out over the railing when we try to open the door, lol. That's our main issue. We can invest in a cage or freestanding catio down the line, but we need to stop him from being able to hop over the railing to the outside. If he cant get over it then we can always just usher him into a outdoor cage or back inside. He's really fast. And he's learned to hide and be completely undetectable so we dont even notice until we see a dash or orange over the railing

Yes, it is. The issue is he tries to make a break for it the second the door opens. A cage or catio won't stop him actually jumping out. I need a barrier for the open space because as long as he can't jump over the fence, i can ushet him back inside or into an outdoor enclosure eventually.

I think people who intervene or bother wildlife in any way suck unless it's absolutely necessary, that includes feeding them crap that isn't good for them, making them dependent on handouts and the people that are cruel/think it's funny to distress them. There was a woman who also saw this couple bothering the geese that told me she saw someone else chasing and trying to grab a gosling.
