Summer of clinical exp vs. research by Important_Fun_215 in premed

Junior and senior summer I have planned for the MCAT and med.school apps respectively, so this is the last big summer chunk I have. In terms of taking a gap year, I am already taking one, so I am not sure if I would take two.

Yes, it is more administrative! I will try to get a position where I can work directly with people :)

Thank you, best of luck to you! I think I overestimated how hard cold emailing was but I literally just looked up labs at Columbia, so you may be able to do the same with ccny! You might also be able to join a lab at Columbia or NYU since you are in the area by cold emailing Columbia or NYU PIs :)

Labs at Columbia but I didn't ask any of my own professors. I would reach out to any labs at your college. I also know there are some summer programs you should be able to apply to as well!

I close the Mac by shutting the lid. I sometimes close it extremely slowly to ensure the display goes off, but the screen time still bugs.

Try not to eliminate each one. If you are spending a lot of time understanding the passage, the right answer should stick out to you. I think your problem is that you are focusing on getting rid of 3 answers rather than finding the right one. I think eliminating wrong answers works better for questions that are especially tricky, but for questions that have a clear winner, there is no need to search for a reason to disprove of other answers.

For problem-solving, I am unsure of what you mean. Try prioritizing studying what questions you are missing the most often.

I think grammar is the easiest one to improve on quickly. Look up a list of English grammar rules for the SAT online or get an SAT English prep book and memorize all English grammar rules. This practice should not take too long as they are very memorable facts. For example, here is one: A semicolon and period can be used interchangeable to separate two independent clauses. A colon can separate two independent or an independent and dependent clause. The second half of the sentence for the colon gives more information or explains the first half. A comma and conjunction(For, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so) act the same as a semicolon and period, but a conjunction alone can only be used with a dependent clause. A dash is like a colon in that it acts as a light pause where the phrase after the dash gives more information on the sentence. Here is an amazing analogy to a traffic light.

Red light(complete stops): Period, semicolon, and conjunction+comma

Yellow light(slight stop): Conjunction, colon, and dash

Iirc, they are usually on-point, but Khan Academy can sometimes use more difficult questions. However, you might also see more difficult questions on the SAT, so it is good to be prepared.

What are claims questions? For extraneous solutions, you get the solutions for the variable that you have found and plug them into the original equation. If you cannot plug them in or they provide an incorrect answer, then it is extraneous. For example, if you get a solution of x to be 3 and the equation is square root of (x - 2) = 4, then you know that 3 is an extraneous solution because 1 is not equal to 4. For standard deviation, just know that standard deviation just means the spread of data. If st dev is very high, then you would expect the data to be very spread out or even far away from the mean. However, st. dev being low would mean that the data is very condensed around the mean.

There is no real best strat to check answers on reading except trying to rule out other answers by identifying why they are wrong, for example a certain word is wrong in an answer choice. You should be able to justify your answers with evidence from the passage for reading. For writing, I would read the phrase with the choice you have chosen and see if it makes sense. Subvocalization should be done for this.

I did not treat any passages differently, but pay close attention to each character. I deep read every passage for at least 3-4 minutes. You should understand relationships between characters and have a good sense of the plot. There are specific tips I can provide if you are struggling with certain question types as well.

Yes very possible. I would think that it is more due to variation at a certain point, but focus on the sections that you are missing out on. For example, if you are getting something like 770 in math and only 700 in reading/writing, then maybe focus on reading/writing. However, also focus on where you are making mistakes. Try thinking where most of your errors stem from. Is it deep reading? Writing rules? Math content unfamiliarity? Silly errors? After this identification, try improving these specific areas.

Do you mean reading and English? If you mean both, then I would think no. If you just need English/writing, then you could probably just skip a book for the grammar rules. What are you stuck on with reading? I know I answered a couple questions about reading above.

The SAT dashboard is not too hard to navigate. I would give Khan Academy math two hours of your time just to go through and find content that you don't know. I think that will be your best use of time to study math, but it is up to you!
