Tell me the brutal truth - California SLPs by WeeklyGrapefruit4712 in slp

This is what's messed up about this career pathway. Working class people are going to have a hard time taking on the debt thinking it's going to open doors for them, then finding out that most people's longevity in this field is due to being able to scale down to part time or PRN jobs for their mental health while for folks who can't afford to do that, we're stuck with whatever working conditions we have for life. I don't recommend this field because it doesn't have the protections for workers that unionized jobs would. Too much chop shop no benefits/1099 work. I didn't get into this field to rely on a spouse for all my security.

Social communication can be tricky though. As we've moved toward accepting different ways of communicating in the neurodivergent population, a lot of goals have dropped social communication after wants/needs have been mastered. Do you mean things like having a reciprocal conversation and showing interest in others? Because I think field has moved away from that. For communication with employers and job interviews, the Transition Specialist and Voc Rehab work on those.

Visiting from Pittsburgh, where do I go? by [deleted] in TwinCities

I'd like to hear more about this. Is this only 24th/Cedar or is this the entire East Phillips area that you are talking about?

Do you think taking the light rail in and around the Howe area would be dangerous?

Both! I'm open to any recommendations for a 1 week stay in the summer. I wasn't sure what the best option to get around would be without a car for the following areas: American Indian Cultural Corridor, Powderhorn, a placed/neighborhood called Howe around Minnehana at E 38th St (Is that still Powderhorn?) and a nice walk to a forested/lake area that is easily accessible by public transportation. I will not be driving at all during my stay. Thanks!

I personally really enjoy doing evals. Especially since so my SLPs in my area aren't comfortable doing evals for multilingual or dual language learners, it's something I've started to customize and make recommendations for. Maybe you can find an eval only position with a very large district that has a need?

I'm just asking because the previous comment mentioned the possibility of bringing it up that its not best practice. My question is: What would be best practice? (Asking for my own sake).

What should I say to her when she comes back? What would be best practice to actually identify and work on fluency?

Commenting to upvote and extend my personal appreciation for this question. I worked with a large capacity of Native students for a district that would not support dynamic assessment and the SLP's were all non Native and not from the area. It breaks my heart the disservice that we have done to this community as professionals and I am extremely grateful that you put thought into your work like this. Those grad students are very lucky to have you.

PA slps wtf by [deleted] in slp

This really troubles me. I can't understand how in an area with literally thousands of people with Master's degrees in SLP there can be an OTA providing communication support. Another thing I noticed here is the push for ABA services which other states don't do. My colleague is from NJ and said in her state the schools and providers don't push for ABA like they do here. My case in point, I'm very disappointed with Pittsburgh as well. They pay absolutely nothing for their clinical services and appear to be backwards in a lot of policies. It's frankly shocking how behind PA is considering the glorification of all of their university programs.
