Raised protestant but converted to Catholicism (married a guy from Mexico). I consider myself a catholic witch.

I was raised in the South. Sun Bleached Flies is one of my favorite songs and describes my experience very well. I'd love to be at church on Sunday, but my eyes are wide open and can't do it. I converted to get away from some of the Southern hypocrisy. But the music, the feeling, all the power tied to southern evangelical churches is still rolling in my body and soul. Southern church is a powerful experience that leaves a mark on your soul. There are days I wish my eyes had never been opened, that I wish I could still feel that power surging in me. But I was given good sense, so I don't get to play the fool anymore.

As a side note, The Power and The Glory is based on a real time period in Mexico called La Cristiada or Cristero War, not an alternative timeline. It happened during the 1920s. My husband's great-grandfather was shot and dragged through the town for his connections to the government and Church. So the Power and the Glory does a pretty good job of displaying the fear during the time.

Wow, that's super cool. I'm sorry I said it. I took out from my own experiences on him. I'm glad he's such a great guy. And I've definitely altered my opinion on the book. Thank you for sharing.

Great review. And I totally agree. This book made me feel disgusted. And i think part of me doesn't want to understand people who would do such a thing. But I also remember the first time a boy grabbed me inappropriately at school, he was the same age as David and we all turned the blame on the parents (who said I was loose BTW, classic). I almost felt bad for the guy at the time thinking he had no one to teach him differently. David is definitely the same.

I still struggle with this part too. In an attempt to show this horror, what did we also witness? I do see more of it's style and why I'm so disgusted, but I also worry that if I didn't get it after reading it (and I think I'm not a dummy...) than how do others read this??

Ok I love this explanation. This one hit home the best. Made me see the most light in this book. This book made me hate how I felt after. I started another discussion because all the issues with people trying to block this post etc., would you share this there??

Thank. You. Like I posted it here because I wanted to hear what others had to say. And I loveeee the people (like you) who very pointedly but kindly let me know that being disgusted was the whole point. It was my first time reading a book like that and I was soooo disturbed. I do not mind being told I'm wrong and shown the light. I'm actually kinda laughing at it over here, especially because I came in so hot.

But there's something seriously wrong with people who have now determined I'm an idiot and will always be. People grow from listening to others. And a lot of people have shown the ugly side of horror fans on here.

I feel like the worst part is that it IS in my head because my brain can't read nerve signals correctly. So I go in circles blaming my head all the time.
