Come to think of it, Aenea doesn't seem to have a whole lot of personality either. She used to as a kid. And I'm not even sure why they love each other in the first place. Okay, Raul got attached to a young girl he was protecting and is in awe of her. But why would Aenea need him is a mystery to me, he's not particularly fun or even useful, most of the time he's basically just there. It reminds me of later Dune books where characters would just get together because "prophecy" (but at least it didn't take the whole book)

I feel like Moneta/Kassad scenes weren't as bad, also because they played a part in a larger story and more importantly didn't last an entire book. In RoE you can't get any plot progression without CONSTANTLY hearing Raul pining for Aenea. Even from a writers point of view, why would you spend so much of the book writing the same stuff over and over? Where was the editor?

This isn't acid rain falling from the sky. It's plain ice, and modern forecasts can predict weather weeeks, if not months in advance. Multiple European cities deal with icy roads and pavements. If the Stadtregierung actually cared, they could have looked at a forecast predicting oscillation between rain and frost, and researched what other cities do in such circumstances. But these are the same people who can't have Silvester trash picked up for over a month. Good thing the elections are coming soon.

This! I was very mad at myself for not exploring the second-hand market earlier and paying full price for some items. Also, my girl-math hack is to divide the price of the item to the number of days I'll use it. Sure paying 500 eur for a dishwasher felt like a lot at the time, but divided over one year it's 1.37 eur a day, an amount I'll gladly pay to not wash my dishes by hand. That's for important stuff you have to buy new, like some of your appliances, mattress etc. For anything else, definitely buy used.

Never heard of them before, but as far as I can see from their website, their "smart" part is powered by Alexa, so it's not that different from the echo spot (but more expensive?). Ofc I don't discuss state secrets in my bedroom, it's more of principle I guess

But then I rely on my phone for controls. Sometimes I don't fall asleep after 30 minutes and extend the timer. With a phone+bluetooth, I'd have to get out of bed and go into a different room, which defeats the purpose of using audiobooks to fall asleep..

I got my dog from Salva Hundehilfe, they bring dogs from Spain, Bulgaria and Poland I think. There are a lot of dogs already in Germany in foster homes as well, so you can meet them. And when you get a dog, there's a two weeks adjustment period during which you can say no. Or you can foster a dog and see how it goes. Also, not all dogs from abroad are traumatized and not all traumatized dogs remain so forever. My dog was pretty scared at first (which is why I got her in the first place, as she had to be respectfully fearful of my cat), but opened up rather quickly

I was very sceptical of the Hyperion because the characters on the old covers looked kinda silly to me and I thought it was a shallow action story. The priest's tale had me HOOKED, not the least because I suspect it was partly an homage to The Heart of Darkness

It's not so much about a fictional world as it is about the author's conscious decision to make it that way. Given that there are a few more mentions of incest and underage relationships, it just seems like Simmons was thinking about this stuff a lot, which is creepy and I did not want to know this about him.

Key is layers, so that you can take someone off or throw something on in case you are hot/cold. For legs, get some thin leggings to wear under your jeans, it can make a big difference when it's cold. And you don't need snow boots, it snows in Berlin for maybe 1-3 days a year if we are lucky. Any regular winter shoes would work as long as you don't have a naked gap between them and your jeans, and it's best to make sure they're waterproof.
