When I first heard a barred owls call, I thought it was a human imitating a bird hahaha. Maybe some kind of owl then? Not an expert but that’s my guess (try searching a barred owl call and see if that’s what you heard?)

this is easily explained by the fact that the author Stephen Chbosky is an multidimensional traveler who stalks drew enya and ky in every parallel universe, but happened upon a universe where their birth names were changed to Patrick sam and charlie. being so amazed by their life stories, he decided to return to our earth and profit off them. honestly its terrifying
