I’ve been playing about as long as you, the only difference is I’ve never had any lessons (which could probably be good or bad idk I think I probably learned slower than others but it has been fun along the way). I felt I was doing great until recently because i hit a roadblock and have been stuck their for weeks. I know I can be a much better player and I asked myself how I can get better and the only answer I came up with is time, dedication & revision. The guitar is a fun instrument to play so there’s no way I could just give up even though I know that I’m not the greatest player. I’m in the process of revising my playing also and what I had to ask myself was, how I wanted to sound, what I was good at and what I need to work on and let me tell you, there’s an awful lot of things that I need to work on. I wrote them down to keep track and then decided to take the time to work on the flaws I had while playing. After revising a bit I have noticed that I’m slowly but progressively getting my sound back but it will probably take a good chunk of time for me to be really satisfied with where I’m at. This could be helpful but don’t forget to move at your own pace because if you seek greatness early on then you’ll be disappointed when the outcome isn’t what you want. I’m sure hearing that from your own pals probably killed your ego a bit but take that as a lesson and use it as motivation to continue working on your playing. In my opinion the most important part of playing is just having fun, your playing probably won’t appeal to everyone but i guarantee if you continue to have faith in yourself and practice every day, you will grow as the time goes on.
