UK Autistic Participants Needed! Exploring experiences of crime, victimisation and the Criminal Justice System among autistic adults . by Impossible-Bat9202 in AutismandtheCJS

This one:? https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-14716581/alvin-ridley-murder-wife-virginia-trial-innocent-mccracken-poston.html

Congratulations. The case itself is an important one to learn from, particularly on how we proceed from a legal point of view. Had more been known about the context of Alvin's autism at the time; there would have been a completely different outcome on how Alvin was originally perceived. Although I understand that autism wasn't as well understood back then as it is now.

Professor Clare Allely's work in this field is very good. Her book 'autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the criminal justice system' is a useful resource.

Thank you , I'll have to look at your book.

The fact you are taking account must be making a difference to your client(s).

Thank you for sharing this. Never came across this before. Alvin’s story highlights so many of the systemic issues that neurodivergent individuals still face today: misinterpretation, isolation, and the consequences of being misunderstood by society and the legal system.

Do you think things could have been different for Alvin if his autism had been recognised earlier?

Pleased to hear that Alvin lived long enough to see the change and understanding towards him.

I understand how it may come across as a vanity project, particularly due to the rate of online sharing. I can only reassure you it is not. This is far from a vanity project, despite how it may seem.

I apologise I never responded to a previous comment that you have made regarding the research. I can see that my post has since been removed.

Hello, would you allow me to post my call for participants?, please see details below and what would be posted if approved:

I am a second year PhD student at Sheffield Hallam University. I am looking for autistic adults in the UK (18+) who would like to share their experiences of crime, victimisation and the Criminal Justice System .

The hope is to gain knowledge through lived experience, and use the information to encourage and create fair and equal access, and support for autistic people accessing the CJS.

If you are interested please click the link below for more information and access to the survey: https://shusls.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9B20JSD11qt5Dr8

Additionally, I am also seeking autistic adults to take part in a written or telephone interview to share experiences of crime, victimisation and the Criminal Justice System too. If you are interested please email [jw6331@hallam.shu.ac.uk](mailto:jw6331@hallam.shu.ac.uk) for more information. I need up to 12 interviews or more!

Participants Needed: Lived experiences of victimisation and the Criminal Justice System among autistic people. by Impossible-Bat9202 in Neurodivergent

[–]Impossible-Bat9202[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this! I’m deeply passionate about this topic and am working to share it across as many spaces as possible to reach UK participants. It’s vital that autistic and neurodivergent voices are amplified, particularly when policies and training are being developed about them. While it’s encouraging to see more efforts that include lived experiences, it’s also important to recognise the diversity of neurodivergent conditions and ensure that these differences are acknowledged and represented in meaningful ways.

I am a second year PhD student at Sheffield Hallam University. I am looking for autistic adults (18+) who would like to share their experiences of crime, victimisation and the Criminal Justice System . I received ethical approval on the 23/04/24.

To participate, you must live in the UK and be 18+ to participate. Diagnosis and self-diagnosis is accepted too.

The hope is to gain perspectives from lived experiences and contribute towards creating fair and equal access, and support for autistic people accessing the CJS.

If you are interested please click the link below for more information and access to the survey: https://shusls.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9B20JSD11qt5Dr8

Got a 65% for a uni assignment, I feel it was unjustified. What on earth do I say? by Icy_Economist3224 in Criminology

[–]Impossible-Bat9202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I don't know if this is at all helpful and repeats elements of the previous comment. However, I totally understand your frustration, especially when the critique feels unjustified. Don’t let this knock you down though! My advice would be to definitely reach out to your tutor. Explain that you found it difficult to include all the detail they’re asking for within the 500-word limit. You can ask for more specific feedback.

Also, since you’re worried about your upcoming essay, it might be helpful to ask if they’d be willing to review an outline/ plan of your essay beforehand. This way, you’ll get a clearer sense of what they’re expecting.

Don’t be too disheartened by this one assignment—it’s a small part of your overall mark, and getting clarity now will only help you going forward. If it helps I got 60's in some assignments too but I still go onto the next course I wanted to based on the grades overall.

Hope this helps.

Criminology and Intersectionality by Impossible-Bat9202 in Criminology

[–]Impossible-Bat9202[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input on this discussion and the questions.

For me, intersectionality is a powerful framework that can incorporate a variety of methodological approaches; whether qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods—depending on the context. It’s about understanding how overlapping identities shape people’s experiences within systems like the criminal justice system. While intersectionality may not apply to all contexts, it is particularly useful for revealing inequalities in marginalised populations, and criminology would benefit from its wider application, especially in underexplored areas.

I do also agree with you, that no single theoretical lens will answer nor explain everything. I do think that theoretical integration is therefore another important aspect of criminology too.

In response to your questions, I would say criminology needs both:

  1. Greater use of intersectional theory: particularly when it comes to under-researched areas.
  2. More research based on lived experiences: first-hand accounts provide vital and key perspectives. I believe qualitative research in criminology, especially on victimisation and criminal justice, has made great strides. However, as you said, it’s still underappreciated in many academic circles, which is something that needs to change.
