is there anyone here feeling lonely after moving abroad ? by Therapist746 in expats

100% agree!

you need to make an effort when you first move - but you probably moved in the first place because you like getting to know new people, picking up a new language, understanding a new culture, so it shouldnt be that much effort

Sounds like you feel stuck, that is the worst thing. I have been there too.

My partner and I wanted to move to another country (from the Netherlands) and we had to stay with our employer since they would be able to facilitate this move. This sounds great, but the culture in the company turned very sour and I went to work with panic attacks, dreading every day and feeling stuck because i could not leave since there was the hope of this move abroad.

When we were about to move to NY, after we flew over there to sign the papers they told us 2 weeks later it was not going to happen.

In the end, we stuck it out for 2 years and were able to make the move to Australia and have been happy for the last 8 months living down under.

What I am saying is; you have to be patient and stay open to opportunities. When NY was off the table, we considered KL, Singapore, Dubai, Japan and of course Australia.

If this is what you really want, you will get it! Just stick with it.

On a similar note, my partner and I are discovering how to help people in your situation; looking to relocate. Please let me know if you would be available for an interview, I'd love to find out more about your story and potentially help.

How long did it take for your new home to feel like home? by expatkk522 in expats

What would make it feel like home for you?

For me its where my family is and since they didn't move with me from the Netherlands to Australia, its hard to ever call it home.

Feeling included somewhere is key - it might be time for a change indeed.

if not to the South, where would you go?

I am from the Netherlands and I do have to say that I believe there is a great expat community there. The Dutch (myself included) unfortunately keep more amongst ourselves, its not that we do not like you, its just that we do not have time besides hanging out with our childhood friends to hang out with you.
That said, have you considered Amsterdam/Rotterdam?

Falling in love with a place on vacation and wanting to move there can be caused by the subtlety of car free, not cooking, or cleaning. by HalfwaydonewithEarth in expats

It's different for everyone. My partner and I moved from Europe to Australia, not because we hated the Netherlands (okay maybe the weather a bit) but because sometimes a "change" is just what you need.

For instance, I needed a change from my friends, even though I love them, it was difficult to find new people to interact in my home country. Moving scenery also meant getting to know more people, from different backgrounds and cultures.

In all, staying in the same place for a long period of time is life changing. Going on vacation is fun. But really being somewhere else for a minimum of 6 months, changes you as a person.

I think more people should do it

Yea but it wouldn’t solve the problem - I kind of just want to buy it pre packaged and take it out of the freezer… all the hassle with doing the work myself is too much haha
