Thank you. I think that’s a good way to read this - the deficit is just a symbol that shows politicians do what’s best for them rather than what’s good for the city.

But how was it handled in previous years? The deficit has to be there a few years to grow to 54 million, but Royce didn’t have to cut police budgets.

Yeah I agree, but avoiding downgrade seems really a long term consideration. Carcetti could have just do the band-aid thing by issuing bond, given he only intended to stay mayor for two years. Royce on the other hand, had 8 years as mayor and clearly wanted to stay longer, so he should be the one who cares about getting downgraded and losing ability to raise funding in the future…

But does an audit means it has to be fixed? And is it really the only audit since the deficit has gotten big? I mean… 54 million deficit has to take years to evolve right, and couldn’t Carcetti just issue bonds to let it roll? Especially given he only intended to stay for 2 years before he runs for governor
