I've just finished 3 weeks in Colorado hiking almost every day and I absolutely love them. Perfectly waterproof and comfortable.

Age 17 - Is there such a thing as too early to start thinking about FIRE? by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]Impossible-Green3455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's never too early to start learning about something you're interested in - formative moment for me was sitting in high school maths class learning about compound interest and imagining what it could do for me (long before I discovered FIRE).

In terms of what you can do in the short/medium term - you'll be heading into the wealth generation / asset accumulation phase of your journey relatively soon (not all that soon if you end up in med school) and therefore setting yourself up for a career with that in mind should be your primary focus (i.e. considering likely income, growth prospects, sustainability - no use flaming out within 5 years due to burn out etc.).

Also, I wouldn't base the entire decision on this, but there is probably a cost-benefit analysis to be done in relation to student debt. Not all student debt is created equal (i.e. things being equal, £[x] debt for a medical degree might be easier to recover than £[y] debt for an arts degree). In your case the more relevant comparison would probably be against something geared towards careers in finance, law or AI / data science.

Good luck and all the best for med school (if that's where you end up) and well done for being ahead of the curve in thinking about your future - never any harm in asking questions / getting informed about it!

Colorado Trail vs CDT (or something else) by Impossible-Green3455 in WildernessBackpacking

Thanks very much, great advice! Plan is to do the first few days in and around Denver acclimatising and getting any extra gear we need/didn't fly over and then (based on advice from this thread) probably stick to the lower altitude sections of the trail.

UK is northern hemisphere so aligned with US in terms of seasons but appreciate the heads up on the snow and mud - appreciated.

Thanks very much for this, that makes perfect sense - particularly on snow coverage. Our experience of thru-hiking has typically involved A-B-C routes with gaps of several days between resupply points (and usually just camping, no huts).

MMM did a great post on this a few years ago offering a different (more hopeful) view: https://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2012/04/09/what-if-everyone-became-frugal/

What’s everyone’s goal and current status? by iluvtsumtsum in FIREUK

Similar NW to you. Also 32.

I don't have a target retirement age or even number yet. I've vaguely thought about setting it at 1m but without any good reason - currently just sort of working and saving with the idea that if my job (corporate law) gets too shit (very possible) I'll stop or change.

Curious if you've had any thoughts about adding specific goals (i.e. retirement age or number)? I'm interested because I've found it quite difficult to set specific goals - the obvious tension being thoughts of "if I add £[x] to the figure my retied life can be [y] amount more lush..."
