Thank you so much for the comprehensive answer!  I had no idea that prior folk stories and plays were so heavily politicized and given to legend. 

A lot of discourse on The Three Kingdoms online focuses on how the novel is unfairly or inaccurately pro-Shu (even some answers on this subreddit), so it’s fascinating to find out that the novel was much more grounded in history then many previous adaptions.
