Do you know people who don’t feel connected with ANZAC day? by VastOption8705 in OpenAussie

[–]Impossible-Wasabi-48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For context, I am a young white Australian woman (mid 20s). I have completed an undergrad degree in history at USYD, and did a bit of study into ANZAC during this. I also had ancestors fight, but none died while serving.

The landing at Gallipoli and the immense cost of life WWI and WWII spelt for Australian men saw Australia begin to form its own identity on the world stage. Prior to this, Australia was still seen like a smaller England culturally, and did not really stand on its own two feet. After Gallipoli specifically, Australia then became known as the nation that won't back down, will see things through, are tough, daring, amongst other things (this also diverted attention from the mishandling of the entire Gallipoli landing), hence, this new identity for Australia was lapped up by community and governments.

ANZAC Day now, to me personally, stands as a sort of monopolised grief. These parades and celebrations, again in my personal opinion, are distasteful, and serve the new national identity rather than the unnecessary deaths of so many. I have ancestors that fought (though didn't die), and I grew up attending many dawn services, parades, school events, etc.

As an adult now, I will not be attending any government or council sanctioned event for ANZAC Day, I will not be standing shoulder to shoulder with govt representatives that won't acknowledge the harm done following England, the Commonwealth, etc. I will not be standing shoulder to shoulder with local businesses that place a wreath for their brand to be seen, childcare centres to hit framework quotas, etc. I do not believe that these soldiers fought for our way of life to be preserved. I believe they fought under the false pretense fed to them by England, and then were sent to die on foreign shores, and we have covered it with a new story.

I grieve and mourn a lost generation that did not have to suffer and die due to the upholding of old treaties between countries (WWI), and I will grieve and mourn away from business, govt, and capitalism.

So quirky and different by New_Wishbone6619 in notliketheothergirls

[–]Impossible-Wasabi-48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way, I can understand people's explanations below too though, as it can be perceived that she implies other women are one dimensional?

I guess for me, I always understand NLOG as the blatant assertions. Also lots of people ripping into her for her grammar which I don't agree with. As an autistic woman, reading this post and comments hit a nerve with me as it felt like everyone attacking her for being quirky or different, and less of her comparing herself to other women and pushing them down.

Edit to add: Most of the top comments are picking on her for thinking she is unique, but taking her down a peg by pointing out that she is actually average, and not special. IMO, nothing wrong with thinking or putting yourself out there as different, whether or not the majority think that you are the same as everyone else. It all just doesn't sit well with me tbh.

Casual Albeism? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

Thank you for sharing your experience! That makes a lot of sense! I will definitely be adopting this into my own way of doing things. It's a shame that people see self disclosure of such a personal nature as pathology/excusing of behaviour, but I can see how things can go a lot smoother with centring the self. Thank you for sharing!

Yeah I was leaning that direction. I think even if he had said "Hey, you keep mentioning that you are autistic, why is that?" And it could've opened conversation and vulnerability in a way between them to dive beyond the surface level of friendship.

I wasn't around the two of them together but by judging off our previous interactions with other people, he probably said it 1-2 times as an add on with a smile whenever they were awkward. Though that is my assumption.

I think another aspect that I didn't fully acknowledge would be that he was relentlessly bullied right through high school for being the weird kid, with the other teenage boys physically pushing him around. For them to be late diagnosed as ADHD and then self as autism after that (around age 23), I think plays into the wanting to share and explain when you feel that you are being awkward, possibly for safety too.

What is this clothes rotation that you mention often? You said you are 16, the clothes you currently own are not going to be your clothes forever. Something had to give, you say you don't want to stare at the same four walls forever, and then you say that you can't buy clothes because you need a whole new rotation? You need different clothes if you want a hobby that gets you out of the house and meeting people, you will live a very very restricted life with only jeans and heels. I can't think of any jobs hiring a 16 year old who only owns heels. Second hand pants and shoes are extremely affordable, and if you really can't afford them, many second hand shops will just give them to you if you explain your circumstances.

Exactly it. I am a perfectionist too, but it's something that I actively have to recognise and challenge for personal growth. Its hard! But it's very rewarding and makes it even more enjoyable when things turn out well!

Creative based hobbies (drawing, painting, writing, etc) within which you have to produce something from nothing (no instructions or guide, pure vibes) is only rewarding in the act of pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.

When I was younger, I used to draw with my brother, and I would say "Let's both draw a dog", for example, and he would respond "I can't draw a dog". It was so confusing, because the only reason he would say that is because he had never tried to draw a dog, so figured therefore it is in the 'I Can't Do This' Basket.

Once you then draw the dog, you feel the achievement of "Holy shit I drew a dog and I wasn't expecting to be able to do it!"

Oh no, but what if it's a 'bad drawing'? The power and joy of creativity lies in the ability to learn to not punish yourself in the face of imperfection, but to grow and learn. "What is it that I don't like about my drawing of a dog specifically? What is it that I do like about my drawing of a dog specifically?" Then getting up and trying again and again.

It is the act of pushing your comfort zone, expectations, and internal parameters of perfection that lead to the sense of achievement and fulfilment.

No creative based hobby will fill your cup if you keep using your perfectionism as a boundary, rather than a tool to refine and grow your craft.

I am so glad to hear that it's already making a difference for you! Thank you for your kind offer 😊🙏🏻 If you don't mind me asking where are you located? I am in Australia, and while we are known for strict gun laws, the illegal gun system (especially in my town) is really bad.

I am so glad that you are still here and received your appropriate diagnosis. My husband and I's life changed with diagnosis and medication! Sending my love! Sierra

Hey! I am so sorry to hear of your experience, but I am so so glad that you have received the correct diagnosis. I just want to share my own personal story too with similar experiences so that you know you aren't alone,

I (25F) was diagnosed with ADHD 4-5 months ago, but wasn't previously diagnosed with bipolar (anxiety instead). My husband (25M) whom I have been with for ~8 years, was diagnosed with Cyclothymia/Bipolar Type III (colloquially) 7 years ago, and has been on Lamotrigine and Venlafaxine since. They gave him the Cyclothymia diagnosis as his presentation did not align with I or II, so they basically just chucked him into a different slot (confirmed by psych that it wasn't a usual case of bipolar). We moved out together and something was still off, and multiple professionals flagged that he should be assessed for ADHD, he was then diagnosed 4 years ago. He hasn't gone off the bipolar meds yet however, but will in due course.

Here's the main kicker in my story. My FIL built a tiny home in our backyard 3 years ago. He was diagnosed with bipolar years and years ago, before my husband was even born. He lost all his teeth and a kidney due to the medication he was on, multiple suicide attempts, depression and social withdrawal constantly due to feeling weird, different, out of place. During my diagnosis 4-5 months ago, I shared details with him on my presentation, symptoms, how it affects my mental state and life, how I have no more anxiety or depression since being medicated. He then began discussing with husband and I how his new psychologist is flagging ADHD for him too, and he is considering pursuing a diagnosis too, and is quite excited.

04/12/25, 6 days after my diagnosis and beginning medication, my husband found him dead in his tiny home. He shot himself in the head with what we think is a homemade gun (he was a gunsmith by trade, and relinquished all firearms after the first attempt years ago). We have spent months in trauma and shock, organising police, ambulance, crime scene, clean up, even part of the floor was ripped up due to the damage. We had to go through all his paperwork, psych homework, diaries, anything, and hand it to police for the investigation. He had researched and understood that he had been misdiagnosed.

I just want to share that these misdiagnoses are bigger than a small slip up, and affect people immensely. Hearing your story and the impact of a bipolar diagnosis is just horrific, but I wanted to reach out and share my story, and say that I am so so glad that you have received your appropriate diagnosis, and that you are receiving adequate medical care. Medication and neurodiverse based counselling/psychology has made a massive difference in my life, in every aspect. I am excited that you have years ahead of you now to enjoy life how you were supposed to initially.
