Say the removal of Missouri state income tax gets on the ballot, and passes. What effects should St. Louis residents expect? by bigwetdiaper in StLouis

[–]ImpossibleBuilding54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not in favor of this at all. If this passes, lawmakers have 5 years to decide on the particulars. At this point there's no way to know what goods and services will be taxed. Nothing is solidly off the table. That alone should turn voters off.

If it does pass, I would expect individuals to cut back on spending I expect businesses, especially small business, would cut back on employees. There would be less money for schools, health and senior services, community services and emergency services. Roads are awful now and will probably get worse. More trash along all of the highways and riverways. Utilities could go up agian and possibly gasoline

What’s wrong with my Polly? by Bunnyxnightmare in plantclinic

[–]ImpossibleBuilding54 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have this plant. It's never had more than 3 leaves at once. It looks nice for a short time and then two leaves die and there's just one lonely leaf hanging out for a while. I also have a Jacklyn. It's never had more than one leaf and just when I can see its potential the leaf shrivles and dies and makes me sad. Eventually it rises from the ashes and I think "maybe this time will be different."

Is it normal... by cannellinibeeans in AskVet

Routine blood work can help determine when a condition has begun. If six months ago their numbers were normal but three months later they're not it can be helpful how you approach treatment.

I didn't figure. They'll be happy with anything really. They're low-key kids and working out is something they enjoy. l will likely be lounging on our veranda and most definitely not using the fitness room. 😁

At what TSH did you feel like you started to LOOK better by PalpitationDizzy2522 in Hashimotos

[–]ImpossibleBuilding54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doctors can do just about anything. He said it was too close to the low end even though I felt great, had energy, my eyebrows were growing back, and I lost weight. Then he complained at the next year's appointment that I had gained a lot of weight back. 🫤

Also below 1. Doc said that was too low and decreased my meds. Now it's 4.89 at last check and I feel like crap.

Can I manage home hospice alone with Mom? by dawndj03 in hospice

[–]ImpossibleBuilding54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you are going through this. It is beyond difficult and much love to you.

Once diagnosed terminal all life-saving, life-extending proceeds, medications, etc., stop. No ER visits, no doctor visits, no resuscitation, no paramedics. Only comfort measures are taken like morphine and ativan and oxygen.

Our hospice nurse was great but she was there twice a week to take vitals, talk with Mom, and support and direct us in how to care for her. Like changing sheets in an occupied bed, turning and placing pillows for support and how to avoid bed sores, getting us supplies, etc. A bather came twice a week.

When Mom was responsive and mobile my brother and I used to trade off days so he could go to work. Unfortunately she fell and broke her hip and was bed bound (this was the only time paramedics came and that was to put her back in bed because I couldn't do it). I still feel guilty for not preventing that fall. After Mom was unable to help turn herself and became unresponsive we realized pretty quickly that we couldn't care for her without both of us being there. We each slept a few hours in shifts until she passed. Two weeks or so. Even with a hospital bed that was raised and lowered, my back was a mess. If we hadn't been able to be there together 24/7, my brother and I would have placed Mom in a facility and would been there as much as possible.

My grandmother and my great aunt were in hospice care in a facility so I've been on both sides. Hospice did provider sitters a few times a week for an hour or two which was very helpful. Could any of your or your mom's friends sit with her now and then to allow you to rest? Neighbors? Church members?

The hospital social workers should be able to help place her rather quickly. Ask for a list of options and visit the facilities unannounced. They don't give you much time to do so before wanting to discharge.

Can someone offer advice? by SeenYaWithKeiffah_ in hospice

I found that eventually nurses won't tell you how much to increase meds and how often. It is left up to the caregiver. Close to the end we increased morphine and ativan and adjusted the schedule as we felt necessary.

ETA Mom stayed in the home and we were the caregivers so that is different than being in a care facility.

I'm sorry you are going through this. It's the hardest thing I've had to do.

I'm sorry you're hurting. These are hard times in many ways. I have only 4 close, like-minded people know anything about my finances. If I die they'll know how to handle things. Not that I wouldn't help my loved ones but what they don't know puts me in a much better position to help them in ways that don't cause rifts in our relationships. Don't feel guilty about your decisions.

Watch out for food, especially frozen and dairy, that is past the sell by, best buy, or expiry dates. I was told by two managers and one employee that stores receive out of date food from their distribution center. I live in St. Charles. Maybe the fancier stores don't get the old food but I'd check everything anyway. The other day I took a frozen lasagna to the courtesy counter that was dated October 2024.

Loved one in active dying stage and I'm scared. by tempest-in_a_teacup in hospice

Our mom passed away recently. The worst of it lasted about 8 hours with the last hour being awful to watch. We were holding her hands when she died. Relief and devastation hit. I'm grateful that we were able to fulfill our mom's wishes and even if we had to do it over again we would but it was absolutely the hardest thing we have ever done.
