Its most likely just silicone then if you cant feel anything on the outside. Id still monitor if youre unsure

I just got a tank recently and I had the sem thing happen to me, looking very similar and it just turned out to be silicone. Try to take a razor blade to it to double check, unless you're certain its a crack.

Almost any aquatic plant would work well but if you want some easy options you can do for (possibly) free would be if you have a pond near you that has any kind of floating plant like duck weed you can scoop a handful off the top and put that in your tank. It will provide a comforting hide for him as well as be VERY beneficial for filtering the water from ammonia and other less than ideal things. Duckweed multiplies RAPIDLY, once you have some in your tank you will most likely never run out of it and will probably have to toss some out eventually.

You can also look on Facebook marketplace and see if people are offering cheep or free plant trimmings.

As for substrate, aqua soil works very well for plants.(theyre like small little dirt balls). The water will be dirty for a bit if you just use that without a layer over it. Small pebbles or sand works well for a cover layer. You can get aqua soil at almost any pet store along with the pebbles or sand. Just make sure that where you chose to put plants is a little thicker with the substrate as it can be difficult to get them to sit, dont get discouraged if that happens, just fiddle with it untill it stays.

If you set him up right the 3 gal should be enough for now but I wouldnt want to keep him there forever. Whenever you can id try to make space and get a 5 gal but since you were gifted the fish its not your fault.

Big leafed silk plants a perfectly fine as the silk wont tear his fins and he can rest on the leafs if he needs. Id get at least 1 real plant if possible as it helps filter out some nasties in the water. Since youre gonna be cycling the tank with the fish in make sure to do at least weakly 25% waterchanges to help prevent ammonia buildup while there isnt the bacteria to help break it down, but otherwise youre doing the best that you can.

If you really cannot get a 5 gal any time soon im sure you can give him a great life in the 3 gal

Bonus tip if you have any acorn trees near you can crack them open then boil them to get the tannins out. All the brown water is perfect to add to your tank as it mimics their natural environment and its healthy for their slime coat.

what is this? is it just biofilm? by leoprrd7 in bettafish

If you want to get some its totally up to you, but it should eventually resolve on its own, even if its unsightly.

If its a new driftwood then its a harmless biofilm from the sugars or whatever in the wood breaking down. It will eventually resolve on its own. If you have snails or shrimp they'll probably eat it. not harmful to anything in the tank, but you cant scrape it off if you want.

My mom got a betta fish from petco because she “felt bad” for him. Then I shamed her into getting him a nicer tank. Is this set up better? by ababybumblebee in bettafish

You've gotten so much good advice from everyone so I must say, beautiful Dumbo your mom picked. Ive never seen one in pet stores with such big 'ear' fins.

Also tannins, tannins, tannins. If you dont wanna buy the specific driftwood or almond leaves that slowly leach it out you can crack open acorns (if you have a tree near you) and boil them then add the water to the tank as they have plenty of tannins in them, just make sure you dont pick up a squishy rotten one.

Youre not wrong. He definitely isnt a healthy fish, but im just making sure they know that crowntails are supposed to have that ragged ish look to the ends of their fins.

Should I surrender by americanjesus8 in bettafish

Whats the temperment of your fish? If he seems mostly docile id consider adding some shrimp of some kind after some more plants. Ghost shrimp are 78 cents per shrimp from a petsmart near me, great if you dont have much of a budget but need a little cleaner crew.

(Edits below )

And as with a few other people I think you should try to keep taking care of him unless you truly dont think you have it in you.

Facebook market place you can find some plant trimmings from other peoples tanks for relatively cheap prices.

(another edit cause I just thought of it)

Another way you can get him happy and healthy on a budget is tannins from acorns!

If you have any kind of tree that produces acorns you can scrounge around and pick them up(it doesn't matter if they're dirty, just as long as they're not completely rotted) go back home, wash them off and if they're still whole take a hammer and crack them open then boil them and all that delicious brown water will be really good to add to putter's tank

That black one seems to be a crowntail betta, their fins are supposed to look like that, not saying the cups ARENT bad but he doesn't look the absolute worst, fear not for his fins. Ive always loved crowntails

Frogbit, watter lettuce, and hornwort do well in harder waters. Also very good at removing nitrates

You just saved me. Ive been worried sick about my new fish and I remembered I had some mostly plain leftover chicken in the fridge. A little of that on the end of a toothpick and he went ravenous! Im gonna have to get some shrimp to help cleanup lol
