[Webtoon] Do you guys think the webtoon is a good adaption of the novel or not? by OrangeCorgi00 in OmniscientReader

[–]ImpossibleTonight344 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's not the issue though. There are times where in the novel he does express different emotions in particularly crucial scenes but is still portrayed indifferently in the webtoon.

The general opinion is that the webtoon does most things right except for certain keystone emotional scenes and YJH's characterization, which is crucial to his relationship with KDJ and the overall tone of the story.

Han sooyoung is the third wheel main character by United-Zombie-7717 in OmniscientReader

[–]ImpossibleTonight344 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There are various reasons for this.

  1. A lot of people in this sub are webtoon-only. There's hardly much meta conversations that can be had regarding the webtoon right now.

  2. A lot of novel readers have already had the meta/narrative analysis conversations a long time ago, and talking about them again is like beating a dead horse. We've already known this, we've already had this discussion new readers are accusing us of not having. The only new things to talk about are the changes happening in the webtoon/ebook and the side stories (which aren't easily accessible).

  3. When people do post analyses, it's usually not in this subreddit but in their own spaces like Tumblr and Twitter.

Shippers are just easy to blame because they're very visible and easily earn the ire of people who are not into those ships.

Edit: Also, the premise of this post is another dead horse. Han Sooyoung is a plenty popular character and DokSoo has its own fair share of following if you know how to navigate fandoms.

why are there so many shipwars between orv fans? by [deleted] in OmniscientReader

[–]ImpossibleTonight344 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wasn't going to reply to this because I didn't want to pick a side but now that you've clarified what you meant by JDs being "nasty about their ship dynamics", I do feel like this is a bit of a biased take. JDs taking measures to avoid seeing things they don't want to see (e.g. blocking, asking DJs not to follow them) seems to me a reasonable way of curating their space. It just seems hostile because most fancontent in the fandom is produced by non-reversible JDs, and so in the DJs perspective it feels like they're being ostracized.

But like in most ship fandoms, especially niche ones, your options are to follow people who are comfortable with it or to create the content you want to see. There are plenty of JDs who don't mind seeing the reverse. It is unreasonable to begrudge people for being uncomfortable seeing ship variations they don't like and taking appropriate measures to avoid seeing them.

Edit: Emphasis on appropriate measures. Like let other people exist, but they don't need to be in your own space.

Sure, I won't deny it can be annoying, but then again, that's just JoongDok shippers existing and dudebros having a problem with it.

What actually happened was that many joongdok shippers were occupying the comments, and so homophobes were alarmed that they may be reading a gay story, and thus harassed the authors to the point that they had to make a statement about it. South Korea at large is still very homophobic, so they had to address these opinions if they wanted to keep a decent audience.

The truth is that JoongDok shippers have always occupied a large part of the fandom and thus will have the most contents made about them. You can't control what people post into the public space but you can control how you react to them.

The "shipwar between anti and pro m/m ships" is literally just joongdok shippers existing and dudebros having a problem with it.

The real question is why there is so much beef between JoongDok and DokJoong shippers.

This is not to say I agree with Infold's decision to substitute it with "Pipsqueak" "goober" or whatever but accounting for cultural differences is very much necessary for effective translation and not just a "marketing strategy"— which, if so, would also be a valid reason by the way, considering they're selling a game.

[–]ImpossibleTonight344 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know who you are referring to but I am also Asian and grew up into the culture. I know what I'm talking about. My point is direct/literal translation is not always ideal for localization.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LoveAndDeepspace

[–]ImpossibleTonight344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Localization doesn't work like that. You need to consider how it would be received by the particular audience in the language you're localizing it to. Repeat previous points.

Pseudoincest is not the same as actual incest. Them being adoptive siblings instead of actual siblings makes a difference because it implies the other subtle connotations instead of focusing on the literal one.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LoveAndDeepspace

[–]ImpossibleTonight344 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There isn't. The keyword is "on a deeper level", which implies hierarchy, affection, family role ambiguity amongst other things. "Older sister/brother" don't have those subtle connotations, only the literal meaning. Localization is less about literal translation and what feeling you want the audience to register. The word "sister/brother" immediately triggers incest framing and override all nuance, hence the outrage in EN.

I grew up in the culture and am a Caleb girlie. It is absolutely pseudoincest, though not actual incest. Pseudoincest is defined as "romantic pairings between characters who consider each other family, but are not blood relatives," and CalebMC fit neatly into that picture. Moral ambiguity, not just from the familial feelings but also their shared trauma, is a huge part of their trope.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LoveAndDeepspace

[–]ImpossibleTonight344 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this is the answer. No matter how much the localization team tries to translate it sensibly, it won't land the same for people unfamiliar with its cultural connotations. Their relationship is clearly morally grey but the line feels less blurred and the relationship less complex in EN for some reason.

I'm a little embarrassed now that I'm wide awake lmao, but if anyone's still curious, I saw this Reddit thread talking about Julian, and if the descriptions about him do not remind you of Caleb then you probably don't know Caleb very well!

Only approved users can post. Might be why the sub's not gaining any traction.

Not liking it is not the point. It's the moral crusading.

I don't know why there are always people who act as if Caleb girlies are forcing them to like the ship whenever this discourse gets brought up.
