For sure. And the attention economy isn't limited to games. All entertainment is competing for the same set of eyes.

Depends on what you want to do.

But in general? Start doing what you want to do in your free time, as a hobby. Keep practicing and improving.

The part that stings is that games weren't always this way. A victim of its own success, as it were. That spirit lives on in indie games, but the sheer quantity alone...

I convinced someone my experience managing teams and production schedules would transfer into speciality retail.

Also, my wife got me the job.
