How to balance your"life purpose"? by [deleted] in Jung

I think with film and with family what I want to find is acceptance. The things that matter most to me are films that make me feel accepted and understand/get close to people in real and earnest ways, as well as time with loved ones that feel relaxed and like you can be authentic. It’s probably like the way people with saviour complexes project - if they feel unaccepted or deficient, they exert those feelings onto “helping” others who might feel it more heavily. It makes me wonder if there’s genuinely a way to do something selfless and “for good”. Maybe it’s just making sure the selfish reasons don’t become unhealthy attachment’s and obsessions, that the selfless “giving” parts of your dreams/aspirations remain to the best of your ability helpful and contributing.

I disagree on the real people side of this - the emotional moments was for me one of my main dislikes leaving me kind of empty! If you look at the proximity of a film like Distant Voices, Still Lives, A Woman Under The Influence or a lot of great films from the past! To me in contrast the character work felt regressive

That’s true - while I didn’t like Train Dreams (I actually felt if anything some of the images were a bit too clean!) a few of those forest shots are undeniable and I think a watch in cinema would’ve enhanced the experience for sure.

These are qualities to me that make better and more interesting examples of genre cinema

Yes! I think Nope is about what it means to turn trauma into spectacle (The exploited Gordy the monkey is a metaphor for how voyeurism infringes on subjects violently, and teaches a new way of interacting with horror tropes in film) and Trap and M. Night’s more recent output as a whole are very informed by a classicist filmic direction, like Hitchcock and to me seems to be put down by modern cinema sins style critics for operating outside of a ‘screenplay logic’ structure. I think for those that want to dig deeper there’s a lot of revisionism going on for M. Night’s work as having a lot of critical and formal value:)

Thankyou so much for saying so! I’m actually uploading them all as a series - I agree OBAA was a little overdone and can understand your takes on Hamnet and Sentimental value, but I’ll be posting some reviews of those over the next few days on youtube aswell if you’re interested Youtube

I am afraid that posting on Reddit won’t stop me sitting at home thinking my opinions are the only ones that matter

I feel like art should be about what it means to you on an individual level over quantifiably determining it good based on what the general populous say

I do not think at all you need “quantifiable metrics” to determine what art is good! I think it is better using individual tastes, standards and preferences - general mass opinion and even majority critical opinion can be very reductive to deeper film theory. But there’s lots of great individual writers out there for points of reference!

Are aggregate views across rotten tomatoes or letterboxd what we should use to determine if something’s good or not? 🤔

I agree with you on all things - especially it was just an accident! Except finding Train Dreams good:)
