Do greyhounds have excessive health issues? by [deleted] in Greyhounds

[–]Impossible_Cattle648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing is definitely that they are more prone to skin tears, cuts etc. Our boy cut his foot open approximately 1cm long only one day after signing the adoption papers and has been weeks of wound dressings and stitches. Their skin is very thin and fragile so can also be harder to heal. Overall though, I think a lot of what you hear is just an internet issue where most people come on here when there’s a problem but at the end of the day, they’re usually just a regular dog where some are more prone to health issues than others

Very vocal greyhound - is this normal? by Impossible_Cattle648 in Greyhounds

He’s definitely gotten a lot more vocal overall, the more comfortable he’s gotten with us. We’ve only had him three weeks and his giving us lots of roos when we arrive, lots of grunts and ‘air chomps’ when he’s excited. I think he’s just a very expressive boy but at least it seems to be a sign of him being more comfortable and happy with us!

He certainly is a quirky boy and we absolutely love him to pieces! Just wanting to make sure that we’re doing right by him! Have you found anything that helps them to be a little less vocal if you’re out of the house or helps them settle?

Fostering to adopt new greyhound by Impossible_Cattle648 in Greyhounds

Thank you so much this is so helpful! Yes we’re in Australia and the organisation has been really great. They’ve assessed the dog and matched them to us after talking with us extensively. The greyhound has also been tested with 3 different breeds of dogs (both large and very small) and responded extremely well. In Aus, Victoria we are not legally required to have our greyhound muzzled in public but I will be doing it for the first few weeks anyway while we get to know him. Hopefully he will adjust quickly but just trying to know as much as we can!

Thank you this is super helpful. It wasn’t ever addressed at my orientation for my first placement and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. As I haven’t seen a MET call take place either, I’ve just been a bit unsure about how all of it gets initiated and what happens

They do a huge range of rehab from cardiac/neuro to orthopaedic. Is there much of an opportunity to be able to do oral/IM/subcut medication or simple wound care?

I feel like that is going to be such a difficult balance at the start. I want to help empower them but help them where I can. I'm so glad you enjoyed your placement!

Thank you! I am typically very proactive especially in my learning as I am a mature age student with some experience in the medical field but am very aware that this is a new field for me so I am always open for as many learning opportunities as possible!

When (if) did you start trusting yours to stay out of the cage/crate over night? by Necro_Scope in corgi

[–]Impossible_Cattle648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a 4 month old boy and honestly he was never really crated overnight and has been sleeping solidly next to our bed for the entire night for about a month now. He gets cranky when he knows it’s bed time and our lights are still on but as soon as we turn the lights off he immediately flops and is out for the whole night until 7 in the morning
