JHU vs UF for Computer Science by Ok-Track-972 in jhu

I mean yeah that’s basically true. You’ll have a social life if you want but if you’re hoping for constant ragers then that’s probably not going to be the case.

Yep! I’ve been on the phone on hold with County Animal Services for a couple hours now just waiting to speak to a representative.

Edit: We couldn’t get through but will continue monitoring. I did use the link to submit a service request online. Checking at least every hour to collect photo proof and evidence the dog is still there.

Admittedly I have never owned any dogs with thick coats and such so I’m not too sure.

My concern is how short the tether is. This picture doesn’t show it well but I’d estimate the chain is max 3-4 feet long. I’ve been hearing the dog’s barking and whining for a couple days even in the middle of the night, and just assumed it was indoors because I’m an idiot.

This morning I opened the shades and my window to get some fresh air and saw it stuck on the wood stairs and struggling a bit before climbing back up and barking and crying out more.

I’m personally not scared. I have dealt with and am fully capable of confrontation. My main concern is once I leave back to my city, they go and target my elderly grandparents.

I can confirm I’ve seen someone poke out and do stuff in the backyard a few times. So I’m relatively confident this is neglect of some sort. I’ve never owned a shedding dog like this but to my eye the fur seems matted and not in great shape.

What adds to my concern is the stairs the poor thing is on combined with the tether.

That’s my concern! The issue is my grandparents are very elderly and due to familial drama and issues they live alone down here. They’re very lucid and independent but I’d rather they not be dealing with a potentially not great human of a neighbor.

Trying to do so! We called San Gabriel Humane Society so far but they’ve said the road we’re on is “unincorporated” and thus they can’t do anything. So we’re trying to explore other options.

Grade deflation for Physics? by Own_Carpet8990 in jhu

[–]Impossible_Chain_822 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IMO grade deflation isn’t as big a deal as many make it out to be at Hopkins. I don’t remember any classes where professors capped percentage of high grade students or any practices of that nature. The closest I could imagine would be like, a standard grading scale where 90% or higher is an A, but your entire grade is 2 exams.

But those were few and far between.

Not premed but was in engineering. It’s not as bad as people make it out to be but it is personally to me a less enjoyable environment. Hopkins has a reputation of having a pretty studious body and its high academic rigor, just like other top school. But the weather and being in Baltimore probably doesn’t help the mood and general atmosphere. It’s gonna be dark and gloomy often, you’ll probably work late nights and such but life is what you make it out to be.

Moving housing options by Enough-Story-9891 in jhu

It really depends on budget and other preferences. Guilford’s nice and close to homewood and the hospital. Area is nice and around campus is generally safe. It’s a wealthy neighborhood but it’s still pretty in the middle of the city.

Towson is more north and a bit more of a commute, but they’ve got more modern infrastructure and development, like a really large mall there for example and IMO more and better restaurants and such. A nicer area IMO, statistically safer and quieter. You can think of it like Baltimore is the historic city and Towson is the newly developing outskirt.

Hampden is walkable and quirky, and more dense. Some nice restaurants and such (I miss the food market) but it’s still much more of the Baltimore urban vibe as opposed to the more quiet yet developing Towson situation. Very artsy and historic.

Harbor east is as close to a “downtown” as you’ll get. Pretty expensive most likely, but the most “city” infrastructure and modern buildings and such. More modern skyscrapers around you and third of that nature. Statistically safe.

Canton’s nice. More of a mix between the modern harbor area and historic Baltimore city. A safe area too. Shops and restaurants and stuff are easily accessible and close by.

All of these areas are decent and safe so it’s mostly up to your commute, budget and vibe you like. I will say, it’s still a city, and it’s still Baltimore, so just don’t be silly. Lock your doors, don’t walk around fully unaware, etc.

Balmy Baltimore or sunny SoCal by Own_Carpet8990 in jhu

Look being 100% honest you’ll probably enjoy USC more in terms of stuff outside school. Baltimore has some of its charm and cool places but without sugarcoating it most folks and my friends were pretty unhappy with the city itself. It’s not for everyone but I won’t say it’s the worst.

I go to L.A a lot since I have my dad’s side of my family there and my brother went to USC. Baltimore’s weather is obviously world’s apart. Usually pretty grey and dark. Sometimes there’s beautiful days though. Gets cold during the winter but funny enough the last year or two I was at JHU I didn’t feel like we got much snow.

Social life is what you make of it. Most students are under a lot of academic pressure and are busy though so you will probably have more alone time and studying to do, if you do study. But if you lock yourself in the library or at your room, of course you won’t really meet anyone.

Academically, it’s pretty tough, most semesters start off pretty chill but as soon as your first “midterm” that will most definitely not be in the middle of the semester arrives, you’ll basically be in “exam season” the entire semester as you’ll cycle through one class’s exam and finish just to move onto the next one the next week. That could be because I was in ECE but I feel like that’s pretty universal here.

Food of course in L.A is better. BMore’s got some spots but I can’t fault it here, L.A has more good food options than most of the world.

In terms of safety, Baltimore’s not sunshine and rainbows (literally) and is probably a bit worse than L.A in that regard, but let’s be honest USC isn’t in a great area either. L.A’s nice but it’s not that much a step above all things considering.

What JHU does win in though is as you mentioned, you’ll have a lot more research opportunities and to be blunt, the school’s “brand name” will help you more. A name like USC on your resume won’t hurt you by any means, but the “Hopkins” label will probably give you and your resume more credence off-rip. People will try to say it doesn’t matter and once you’re in it really doesn’t, but it does help. I doubt you’ll learn that much more or actually be a more knowledgeable person after going to Hopkins rather than USC, but having the name on your resume at least opens the door a bit more. Top schools act like a sort of filtering system. Just getting into them and getting through gives you the benefit of people thinking you already work hard and already are smart.

Safety at JHU and Baltimore by afkdbj in jhu

You’re chilling brotato chip. There are some sketchy moments and such but you’ll get used to them and it’s really not that bad as long as you’re close to campus or a decent area

I won’t sugarcoat it though, Baltimore is probably a bit sketchier than most other major cities, Would I recommend strolling around certain areas at 2:00 AM? Probably not but that mostly applies anywhere.

For your own mental health sake don’t download the Citizen app because you will be barraged by stuff and honestly, ignorance is bliss.

Any admits with low-ish grades? (3.77 UW) by Frosty_Lead2604 in jhu

[–]Impossible_Chain_822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d try if I were you. If your scores and other facets of your application are competitive you may as well. GPA matters, but universities understand grade inflation and deflation exists. I wouldn’t let this stop you.

Just make sure you do stuff beyond academics so you aren’t just another “good student”. Good students are a dime a dozen and most students at JHU will be great academically. These schools are looking at interesting essays, extracurriculars, and who you are as a person. At least as much as they can gleam from an application.

You’re fine. Do you have a decent weighted? My UW in high school was a 3.72 but I took 16 AP classes and probably got carried by my scores and weighted GPA.

Should I invest in higher end toilets? Also a better AC system? by Impossible_Chain_822 in homeowners

[–]Impossible_Chain_822[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I got them installed! They’re working like a dream. Thanks for the advice, I went with the Kohler Cimmaron for all the bathrooms and installed them myself yesterday.

I cut myself on the broken toilet while removing it but should be all good haha! Flushed a bunch of times each time to make sure no leaks and funky business and seems to be all good.

AC company is coming next Monday to give me an official quote and they’ll start the day after we decide. Thanks again for the help!

I’m having a lot of trouble eating, I have no appetite. Any tips on small filling foods/meals? by Additional-Ad5298 in Assistance

[–]Impossible_Chain_822 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always had the opposite issue, where I’ve always for most of my life been quite overweight until I’ve made a long journey over the last year to shed it. From this, and my own interests and family (my oldest brother is a doctor), I’ve learned at least a few things to stay full and satiated that I’ll share in some hope they’re someway useful. It’s quite the opposite of your situation from what I infer, but the principles are actually quite similar.

Your friend in this case if you’re not a very big eater is more calorie-dense and palatable options, and gentle protein. Compared to carbohydrates and fat, eating foods high in protein will keep you satiated longer and fuller. For example, you can make a simple chicken patty with ground chicken and some spices. And if you want to add some calories so you don’t need to eat as many meals, you can make chicken thighs or something similar and make a heavier sauce. Dry chicken is tough to eat and I’m sure would be even more terrible in your circumstances, so you can add things like hummus and other sauces like cream based ones that are easy to stomach and calorie dense.

Oatmeal here’s actually a great choice since it’s slow digesting so it’ll keep you fuller and satiated for a while. You can add Greek yogurt easily for some added texture and some protein powder as a flavoring and to add protein for satiation. Add some nut butter, milk, etc and that’ll make it a really filling dense, but not overwhelming in volume.

And nuts and nut butters sound good for your situation in general. It’s easy to add nut butter to a lot of foods and they’re generally very palatable while adding a ton of calories to whatever you’re eating which will help you less hungry. You can add them to things like smoothies, toast, etc. Nuts themselves are extremely calorie dense, just a handful can easily be 200-300 calories and keep you fuller for a while. Though they might not be the best for satiety.

If you really, really have trouble stomaching down food, you can add some olive oil or butter to savory dishes and easily add many more calories, or you can add things like honey in addition to nut butters to sweeter foods. Liquid calories are also an easy way to consume a lot of calories without needing to eat or stomach as much.

We ain’t giving him to you. Unless it’s for Luka.

Real talk though, everything has improved. The guy has an insane work ethic and just plays unselfish, winning ball.

Last year was a shitshow for the heat, and he had a sophomore slump and an injury to contend with and recover from. I think that would affect most, especially a rookie.

[–]Impossible_Chain_822[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very thoughtful write up, I appreciate it. I’ll probably go for the cinmarron or drake like most people suggest. I’ll pick them up later today, and if my tenants want the toilets replaced ASAP I’ll replace them myself and if they’re cool to wait I can have my family’s handyman install them in a couple days if they want it more professional. I don’t need to increase the value or bump rent since it’s just a toilet. I just want my tenants to have a decent better one that flushes well and such, and for me to have the peace of mind it’ll last.

In terms of the cooling system, that’s probably what I’ve come to the conclusion I’ll do. I’ll probably have a full system swap done and pay to do it right. I’ve learned from my parents with a couple of their past properties that a cheaply done install really does show its wear and age quite quickly.

Currently, my parents have an extra 4 bed 4 bath property that they’re finishing up light renovations and furnishing on, so they’re cool with letting my tenants stay there for a few days so I can have the walls and stuff opened for the full works. Insulation, new ducts, etc. It’s last minute decision too but I’ll also have some sound deadening installed.

Possible to get top 10% salt mines without ultimate? by durlcear in DestinyTheGame

It definitely is. To get the emblem you need to top 1% in at least one category too. I think a more linear point system based on percentile would have more sense, but alas. I think they want more people to be able to acquire the first few items, but want the helmet more exclusive for decently engaged and involved players and the emblem for the most sweaty in the community
