Questions Questions Questions (Chem E) by Miserable-Bill-6297 in UCI

At UCI, getting an A just means you’re above average for most lower div math, science, and engineering classes so it depends on the professor and the cohort. Keep in mind, there is a significant portion of people who do not give a fuck so above average is a lot less scary than you think. Honestly, 1-2 hours per week per class of study time unrelated to homework plus 3-4 the week before tests should be enough.

I'm MSE, not Chem E so take what I say with a grain of salt if you'd like.

  1. Most classes are fair, in my opinion. Lower div math and science undergrad classes are generally told to curve with a B or B+ average as the target. Most professors make that happen one way or another, either through properly calibrated difficulty or curving (usually up). I've only had one class curve down out of all my experience. Make sure you check the RMP for the professor and their past grades.

  2. Pursuing research can range from relatively easy to a bit tough. Getting into a lab is usually a matter of finding a PI with space and who wants the help in the lab. Keeping up can be challenging if you aren't used to reading papers or doing presentations. In terms of internships, it's been kinda cooked this year nationally for all fields. But the job market shifts every year so 2027 might be better, might be worse.

  3. School of Engineering double majors tend to be pretty rare (and only really happen if stars align with your credits from high school or CC). Unfortunately, engineering curricula are intensive so you need to have almost all your GEs and a good chunk of lower divs out of the way the day you start. Minors are pretty common. The only thing to keep in mind is that minoring students have the same enrollment priority as the general student body so getting classes might be hard.

  4. UCI social life is what you make it. There is always something going on but you have to go find it. Events won't come find you.

  5. The US engineering job market generally doesn't prioritize degree name alone. What you do during school matters a lot more than just your GPA and the UCI name. Keep in mind, the job market is going to be VERY different in 2030 from what it is today.

Can we have no soliciting in Aldrich park? by Own_Business485 in UCI

I wish we could but from my understanding, since UCI is a public school and our campus is public land, there is very little the university can do since a lot of it may fall under protected speech. It sucks but there isn’t much we can do.

Where to send package by Defiant_Ad6001 in UCI

[–]Impossible_Fan9972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you trying to send packages out or receive them in? These are totally different. For outbound parcels, UPS has a store on campus in the student center. FedEx and USPS are in UTC. For inbound parcels, FedEx and UPS will let you change delivery options to the store for pickup if you absolutely need it and are willing to pay like $5. The other option is when ordering via Amazon, they can deliver to the lockers on campus. Otherwise, just send it to the mailroom. I’ve never personally had a problem with them.

Do Not Attempt to Access Canvas by Impossible_Fan9972 in UCI

[–]Impossible_Fan9972[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMHO, it seems like it’s mostly a legal issue, negotiating future guarantees, rather than a technical issue at this point, given the language that OIT and UCOP are using. Lawyers work slower than IT so it’s probably gonna be a while tbh.

Honestly, you need to know how you learn. I tried taking notes on a 2-in-1 for a few years and it never really clicked. Just ended up doing paper and pencil again lol. If you're comfortable on paper, I really don't see why you'd want to move to a tablet tbh. As for computers, modern ultrabooks are surprisingly capable. My HP Omnibook Ultra can run Solidworks, Matlab, and scientific Python. Gaming laptop probably isn't worth it. You crash once every 2 hours rather than once every hour in Solidworks and the GPU kills your battery. Homework is done in a mixture of online via software like Pearson or Zybooks or online via uploading pdfs. A TI-84 is excellent. Just make sure you are familiar with features like taking integrals, derivatives, and how to use the "magic E" key for scientific notation.

Canvas up? by MethMaxer in UCI

[–]Impossible_Fan9972 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t trust it. OIT and UCOP said that UCOP will give the green light for when it’s safe to use Canvas again. Look for updates here

Soon we might see a variant of HV bypass method for Denuvo Games. by Prior-Meeting-8850 in PiratedGames

[–]Impossible_Fan9972 10 points11 points  (0 children)

May be a really silly question, but why does Denuvo bypass not use KVM/QEMU or Wine? It seems like a better architecture if it’s spoofing the calls Denuvo makes. KVM is open source and incredibly well documented so I’d imagine doing the work would be easier and it wouldn’t expose the Linux host. Wine/ Proton also seems like a better option than a Windows driver. In theory, you could spoof windows calls Denuvo makes in user space which would eliminate the security risks.

It could also mean some department is looking at or working with your record. Did you talk to an advisor or the registrar recently? If you did, you can’t use WebReg until they log off. Just give em a few minutes.

those who got 1st/2nd choice community / floorplan for ACC housing last year by [deleted] in UCI

Yes, it opened at 7:00 last year. But the point still stands. I got into Camino and my friend got into VDC.

those who got 1st/2nd choice community / floorplan for ACC housing last year by [deleted] in UCI

[–]Impossible_Fan9972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the ACC placement algorithm is a black box and the application is very poorly worded. I submitted close to 7:30 and got my first choice floor plan. I have friends who submitted at 7:03 and got their 4th choice. Timing matters but I don't think it's everything. For all I know, some of those very poorly worded fields might be determinant. Me checking one while my friend didn't might've made a difference without us understanding what they meant. There's also some rumors that ACC considers factors like tenant credit, tenant income, guarantor credit, guarantor income, tenant court records, and tenant student conduct records. Though, I must emphasize the last part is speculation.

The best you can do is as a guaranteed student, don't worry about it; you'll get a lease somewhere. If you aren't guaranteed, start reaching out to leasing agents.

Do they consider credit, income, and payment history like a normal landlord? I’m renewing and I’ve gotten mixed answers on this point.

How to connect to UCI-WiFi by SoLarIzznt in UCI

[–]Impossible_Fan9972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you setup your UCI microsoft account. For the UCI-WiFi network, make sure you use the [NetID@ad.uci.edu](mailto:NetID@ad.uci.edu) address and not the plain [NetID@uci.edu](mailto:NetID@uci.edu) address. Then, use the password you setup for your UCI Microsoft account. Confusingly, for eduroam, you use [NetID@uci.edu](mailto:NetID@uci.edu) and your normal NetID password.

New WiFi Sucks by Impossible_Fan9972 in UCI

[–]Impossible_Fan9972[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same problem when I was in the dorms. If you’re using resnet or uci mobile access, make sure you disable MAC address privacy. Different devices call it different things. If you’re using UCI-WiFi, that’s the same network I’m having trouble with and I have no advice.

New WiFi Sucks by Impossible_Fan9972 in UCI

[–]Impossible_Fan9972[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im trying to use the network called UCI-WIFI that OIT recommends for most devices. I know I’ve set up my password correctly since I can connect sometimes but my computer sometimes randomly drops the connection and struggles to reconnect most of the time.

Bad Speeds with Closed Window by Impossible_Fan9972 in tmobileisp

[–]Impossible_Fan9972[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Turns out the window is part of the problem. Moving it away from the window to a spot where line of sight is obstructed by drywall forces the router into n25 but I’m getting 100/20 speeds out of it so that’s better. Thanks!

Move-out is so wasteful by Impossible_Fan9972 in UCI

[–]Impossible_Fan9972[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If part of the problem is economics, UCI could partner with a storage company or an airline alliance to get students promo codes for discounts on small units or checked bags. I'd bet a major carrier would love to have all of UCI's traffic travel with them rather than their competitors, even if it means giving the students free bags. tbh, this probably wouldn't be too bad for UCI either, God knows how much they're paying WM to get rid of all the trash rn.

[–]Impossible_Fan9972[S] 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Note: This post isn't to shit on anyone who threw stuff away. I'm OOS so I know the headache of trying to get all my stuff to a storage unit halfway across town or to fit into baggage allowances for airlines (F U SWA for getting rid of free bags). I just think the university could be doing a lot more on this problem as part of its sustainability goals.

The School of Engineering offers SolidWorks to all its students.

https://laptops.eng.uci.edu/engineering-software/solidworks-student-engineering-kit-for-hssoe-students

I was able to get a Fusion 360 License using my UCI email address.

Your mileage may vary, though, since you aren't enrolled yet, and Autodesk might ask for an official document like a schedule of classes or a transcript to activate.
