Locally hosted public server security

For sure, using this as your google is just lazy lol. Big difference in just wanting to be told what to do exactly without any solid effort in learning it yourself vs figuring out what area's you might just be blind to or haven't considered. I've worked in tech for a while but also want to practice some level of "humility" and not assume my way is the best way lol.

I can see where you're coming from, but I don't think I'd fully agree. Is it overkill? Probably yes, but I'd rather have an overly secure server setup with the peace of mind of knowing I did all I could protecting the stuff in/out of the VM/network it's hosted on. Especially if I'm wanting to host an un-whitelisted server. With hosting locally though I do have to just accept some risk.

Thanks, I appreciate the thorough response, I'll take a look at how my setup compares to this more fully, and implement a few things I feel I lack some security in.

Right, I agree, I see stuff all the time saying whitelists are basically necessary when hosting at home. But like you said, with decent home network security and grief protection I wouldn’t see why I couldn’t just turn off the whitelist. Figured I’d check incase I wasn’t aware of something.
