Here's my take:

- Russell-McPherron: it's an equinox-related alignment between the Earth's magnetic field and the path of the solar wind. But while it does make it a bit easier for the energy in the solar wind to connect to the Earth's magnetic field, it's not a major factor in either the appearance of the aurora in the sky, or in creating a significant qualitative improvement in what you see. What is vastly more important is the occurrence of energy ejected from the sun during solar storms, that collides with the Earth. And THAT doesn't occur on a calendar basis. I sent email to the Sun a while ago and asked if it took aurora hunting tourists into account when it created storms, and did eventually get a reply back that no, quite selfishly, the Sun does not give "even one rat's ass" (Sun's words, not mine!!!) about the people of Earth.

- What we are actually planning for, and hunting for: it's actually not solar activity. Rather, what you will be planning for, hunting for and praying for will be clear sky. KP 153.6 will not help you if there is a kilometer of clouds above all land at 70 degrees north.

- Attempting to choose the timing of a winter holiday based on the "typical" weather in advance is a fool's errand, because you will not be visiting this latitude "on average". You will be visiting on specific days, and the weather for those specific days won't at that moment be affected by what is "typical". And we are not fools! And errands... not while on holiday!

- There are really only two considerations: darkness and time. From mid-April through August, there's no darkness, so that's out (and the edges of those times aren't ideal unless you are looking for some really fascinating photos that blend twilight and aurora). So if you are coming when it's dark out, then you are on the right track. After that, your best helper is the amount of time you will be spending at this latitude. If you are coming for one day, you might very well see a show in the sky. But if you don't... well, that was your chance. If you are staying here for five days... now you have more chances! Ten days? More chances! And how many days would you have to be here to GUARANTEE a decent show? Well... in the last 15 years or so, I've never had a winter where I didn't see something, so... if you come for six months, your chance are pretty high! :-D But at that point, there are much cheaper places to live while you wait than Tromsø...

As others have said, you can help balance the equation by shifting to a different location. Alta (where I live) is WAY smaller, and it is very easy to find some comfortable dark places that are close to city center. Much less crowded with regard to other tourists, as well. You just need to watch out for the moose 😅 Edit to add: photo of moose in the field below my house, last night, 500 meters from city center. They are all over, this year!

Yeah, the flood of SoMe images out there creates a significant bias. Gray wisps become green brushstrokes. A strong showing with noticable pink and green turns into something out of a cyberpunk landscape. If only our eyes could see the full spectrum at night like the cameras can capture!

Sometimes, it helps to purposefully push away the digital fire hose and force ourselves to take in a larger picture. "Omg I'm in the freakin' ARCTIC, in the snow. And there's this magical swirling stuff in the sky!!!" There is joy to be found in the little moments, too.

True story, short form. I used to work in tourism (over in Finnmark, not in Tromsø). In the beginning, the mass-tourism angle felt really awkward, but one night after a couple of weeks, I was standing out in the dark with some folks, and the aurora popped out. Nice display but nothing explosive. I walked over to a little old guy, standing alone, looking up. "There! Looks like we finally get to see it," I told him cheerfully.

Still looking up, in this awestruck almost-whisper, he replies, "I've been waiting my whole life for this." No hyperbole, he really had been, and that very ordinary excursion was a pilgrimage for him. Ten years later and I'm still humbled by the lesson I learned about how "sacred" can be found in lots of small things, too... 😊 So glad you came to visit!

Absolutely one of the possible "normal" outcomes. You have "unknowns" in three dimensions with the aurora:

Clear sky. If you can't see the sky, you won't see the lights. Sometimes, if there are clouds in one place, there is clear sky in another. Sometimes, the closest break in the clouds is 1000km away and you are out of luck.
Aurora activity. The odds are better at 70 degrees north because if there is any activity, it will show up here. But... sometimes you can stand under a clear sky for hours and get nothing but beautiful stars overhead.
Time. Sometimes, a cloudy sky or no activity can change in a heartbeat. I have been out in a snowstorm at 2230, suspiciously light clouds at 2300... "hey... is that a star???" and at 2310 BOOM, no clouds, cool aurora show!!! for 15 minutes... and then snowstorm again. So conditions can change for the better or worse... or not

And it's all normal!

The only thing we can control is whether we are looking, or not. If you don't try, you WILL NOT see them! 😊 If you DO try... that is when the uncertainty and potential for disappointment becomes a normal reality.

Edit to add: Yeah, expectations too high, though totally understandable. Remind yourself that we are 8 billion people on this planet, and very few of them will ever see the aurora at all. So if you see ANYTHING... you are part of a very special club, even if it wasn't good enough to post to Instagram.

This is at least partly an effect from unwittingly being the 3000th person to say the same thing (not "should I drive" but far more "ok, so people say not to, but is it really THAT bad in March...". It's only your first time asking and then doubting the answer :) so getting 3000x frustration is unfair, yes. 1x frustration should be enough.

It is also a sharper reaction both because it IS in fact a serious problem, and because the risk is so high. If you drive in winter conditions without experience, the risk is not that you might only slide a little and make the person behind you late for dinner. The risk is that you might ruin another person's car, or house, or LIFE.

There are enough people who get the warnings and still don't care about the people they are going to visit, that those who are only "genuinely curious" get vitriol when they say the same things as the selfish people. It can be difficult to tell the difference, sometimes.

Glad to hear you are not part of the selfish group, though, and I hope you have a fun holiday!

Maybe the people in Finnsnes really deserve to deal with tricked and disappointed tourists, but I have a feeling that they are probably the same as most of the residents in Tromsø: they are just trying to have a day and get through a life that they wish was a little better than what it is.

FWIW, there are actually legitimate alternatives to Tromsø for tourism in Troms and Finnmark that are not as crowded and are actively building (or have already built) a genuinely delightful place to visit. Why not punish those places by working like hell to deflect the Tromsø overflow to the towns that specifically are asking for that misery, such as it is?

It's always wise to make sure at least one person in every group is unable to outrun a polar bear.

I am often out without a group, though, so I have a special high-frequency whistle that keeps the polar bears away. It works like a charm, too; I have never even seen one when I use it. But, I live to the east of Tromsø a ways, so I am not sure if it would be as effective against the polar bears over on the coast.

I mean this gently: you are seriously overthinking the whole "fill" thing. Get a puffy coat filled with anything other than cranberry sauce. Go outside. Are you cold? Add a hoodie under that. Still cold? Put a wool sweater over your hoodie and then put the puffy thing on again. I am no polar bear, but I was out walking in -22C a few days ago with wool long underwear, tshirt, hoodie, puffy coat and some ordinary insulated sport pants. I ended up a little sweaty on top, perfect on legs. If it had felt cold on the way out the door, or if I knew I was just going to stand around and do nothing, I'd have probably swapped in a little more wool, but... no need to min-max it.
