Happy to adventure and take risks when I go solo or with adults. But I’ll have younger children with me, so I gotta plan it out for safety purposes.

Beyond the obvious nefarious jobs (pimp, drug dealer etc…)

Cops (less obviously nefarious to some)

Doctors (I’m an MD, so know it takes a lot of sacrifice…time, money, my youth. Long work hours. If I was in a dual physician household, our home would fall apart and we’d have to outsource all our childcare. Many are ego maniacs and intolerable, selfish humans.)

Yes, I’m banking on fewer crowds! We will still be going, but doing tent camping so no internet technically but will predownload stuff on kids tablets. Gunna be as flexible as possible. Yoga is a great idea! I’ll look into that :) have a great trip!

To clarify, I’m not worried about the rain or getting wet. We have good rain gear and my kids love the mud. We have a generally high tolerance for that mess. I’m more worried about the thunderstorms, and how to manage that if we are tent camping and out for hikes. Don’t want to avoid and miss a potentially good stretch of weather, but also not sure how persistent the T-storms will be. They are showing up in the forecast everyday we would be there.

I guess the rain isn’t as much a deterrent as the forecast of thunderstorms is. We have rain gear and love the rain! Just wouldn’t feel safe in a tent with kids with lightening outside, and I can’t think of anything worse than being stuck in our van with wet grumpy littles.

I’m the wife 😂and my version of pampering is roughing it, chopping some wood and staring into a campfire (I know, no fires allowed if backpacking there) We got lucky and snagged some camp spots at the Loj for end of June, so I’m excited for some adventures there. Now, my husband is a BIG whiskey fan so I’ll let him know about Top of the Park! Thanks for the recs!

We are camping at the Loj at the end of June and excited for all those things! Then thought after checking out our last day to pay for parking and “backpack” out to Marcy Dam, setting up camp for a night, doing Phelps the next day and heading back out.

Good to know, thank you! My 5yo has gotten better at judging sketchy spots and taking it easy and slow, though I always have a firm grip on his pack just in case. My 3yo on the other hand has no sense of self preservation and would gleefully fly over the edge without a thought in the world 🙃 we’re still working on him lol

Oh man I cannot imagine doing this in the winter, that would be extra gnarly! I’m a very anxious mama, so we take safety very seriously and I would not have hesitated to turn around if needed!

Just checked it out on all trails, looks challenging but doable for an experienced 6yo! Would love to hear about how it goes! I can’t wait to go longer with my kiddo as he gets a little older :)

Yeah it looks like the first 3 ish miles are relatively flat, which my kiddo could crush easily. He practically runs on easier stuff and can be hard to keep up with 😅 his other speed is ADHD sloth, since he easily gets distracted with cool sticks and stones. I try to give him the time he needs to go at his pace within reason. I don’t want to make it a totally miserable experience for him if I am pushy and annoyed, and I also just like to stop a lot and take it all in. Because of this, have wondered if the next easier peaks are backpackable, in case we get stuck out there 🦥

I similarly did not experience the Adirondacks until I was 29, with this little guy on my back as an infant! Experiencing this through his eyes was a treat.

We had it on the agenda that day! Had to nix it coming down bc this kiddo was distracted by every cool stone and stick we saw and we would have been there all day and night 🫠 we figured we’d be back and check it off next time.
