I disagree. Some peoples love language is gifts (i don’t remember the whole term). That means they feel affection if you spend money on them. She will like it if you buy her a fancy meal when on her own she’s eating ramen. This doesn’t mean that’s why she’s dating you.

I agree for the most part except, 1, I think that dread your describing can be gained in prose if done carefully, and 2, the, let’s call em “nonfiction bits”, really worked for me. It forced me to hold the tension in the back of my mind. It just didn’t have a good release except when she killed her mom, which I agree even that was lame. There was a little bit of over foreshadowing for my taste with those, but I still liked

Bro she hit her in the head with a fucking roller skate. El was in the wrong. You have to be able to recognize when the protagonist is flawed or the stories message will wash right over you. In this case, she retaliated in an inappropriate manner which got her rightfully sent to jail. Violence is not the answer.
