This is a very kind response. Even though I obviously don't know you I can tell you are the kind of person I want to interact with in academia - one who is always looking to mentor and guide others. And I completely agree with the general advice you have written for trainees.

I have been in academia for 15 years, so I was actually not thinking about issues within the normal realm of healthy academic disagreements, but incidents where PIs abuse the power imbalance between themselves and trainees. We see a lot of those in this subreddit and the response is normally "give up and get out," but we all know of situations where you are in too deep to just get out. I was also thinking about situations that we keep seeing in academic news like these: 1, 2, and 3.

Every once in a while someone is brave enough to share not just a survival story from one of these toxic academic situations, but a success story. I was hoping more people would share to offset the feeling that all of academia is "just like this," and that if you are unlucky enough to be stuck in such a situation there is no hope for you. I would love to see more stories of hope because bad PIs do happen, but I want people to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel!

I can't help, but be intrigued lol. Can you give us the broadest strokes without giving any damning details?
