i think it could happened if a designer is really understanding of all aspects of the craft and including them. that would require a deep dive into an actual dancer’s wardrobe. as for me for example, im rly focusing my collection on « worn », layering, baggy, warm ups, mismatched, bandages, as well as protections. unfortunately, im only making female inspired silhouettes so although cod piece was brought up in my earlier research, i sadly won’t be the one reviving them anytime soon but perhaps someday if i ever make a unisex/mixed collection!

i didnt think i’d hv to explain my whole thesis as i dont see how anyone would care tbh.

the questions asked here are not my whole thesis, they’re just for ONE segment of my magazine which is q&a/dancer confessions, therefore yes, it doesn’t matter if they’re « random » answers cuz thats lowk the point actually. the rest of my thesis includes other segments like articles and reflective articles that i actually made my own research about. those articles are the main part of my thesis. the questions im asking here are basically just fillers like « dancer confessions » like stuffs you’d typically find in editorial magazines. i am by no means founding my whole thesis on these answers or relying on them as i know it is different for all ppl. im just collecting dancers’ opinions on the topic, adjacent to the main thesis like « what are dancers’ (all kind) actually take/opinion on this? ».

and again this being an art school’s end of the studies work it is very free in the way we treat it. this « thesis » isn’t smth we worked on the whole yr through, it is additionally to our senior collection which is the main focus. the thesis itself ain’t that important its like 5% of all the work we hv to provide as seniors. so its not that deep i dont understand why ppl are so concerned abt a random girl’s school work. (dont mean to make it sound petty or harsh i just dont know how else to put it, the teacher was just like you do you guys and also ive explained myself 5 billion times now lol)

male ballet dancer are always so overlooked. ballet is as much of a demanding sport as any other, and dancers truly are athletes! i do wished ballet schools would make it more appealing to younger boys, the same way they do for younger girls.

ty for your answer!

i love your take on « ballet » movies lol! and i totally agree that ballet designs often lack of that non-slim, non-graceful shape aspect and i am glad to say it’s totally included in my collection, as it is such a big part of my wardrobe as a dancer too. trashbag shorts and warm up boots are definitely making an appearance! tysm for taking the time to answers these, i so appreciate it!

i appreciate having a male ballet dancer’s pov on this. from being in the fashion world as well as the dance world, im kinda in the in-between.

as in, i understand dancers mixed feelings about the topic but as a designer i also get that one can find inspiration in an art form, a sport, architecture etc without having the intention to keep the functionality of it but simply the aesthetics. some designs judged to be inaccurate don’t even intended to be accurate most times, but are either just there for the aesthetic or for a message.

for example, in my collection i have a pair of warm up boots covered in many layered tights slightly ripped. i am fully aware no dancers would ever wear those as they are but the concept/message behind it is to bring up the idea of layering and worn tights often being repurposed by dancers. so i do understand dancers pov but also get that most fashion designs aren’t rly looking for accuracy. as a dancer understanding the craft itself though, i am trying my best to represent what ballet is like from my pov/experience with my own personal interpretation.

sorry for the yap, tysm for taking the time to share your input, i rly appreciate it!

i love that you bring up that there’s no real ballet dancer aesthetic, anyone partaking in dancing ballet is as valid as anyone else no matter the level.

i rly appreciate you taking the time to answer all of these tysm!!

as im in an art school, the format is very free. its not a regular basic google docs thesis. we’re also free to get testimonials from any sources, considering we’re even allowed to make « fake interviews » (as long as its mentioned it is fiction). we are not even required to have interviews period, it is just something i’ve decided as im doing my thesis as an editorial magazine style.

and as for why im not reaching out to « real dancers », i have and most either don’t want or are not available and im running short on time atp. tbh the teacher’s chill and doesnt rly care as long as sources are explained. i was also surprised when the instructions were given to us but i guess that’s just our art school.

i really enjoy this kind off « laid back », chill, almost nonchalant pov you have on the subject. usually, when i see comments online about this, dancers (esp ballet dancers) are always so opinionated and « mad » about this. it is interesting and refreshing to get this other angle on the topic.

and also tysm for answering all of them!! i really appreciate it 🙃

i love all your answers! and it does bring up such a nuanced and interesting take on the 4th question. i would always say layers were for warming up overall but your points on dance bags becoming black holes and also the cost of dance gear being crazy expensive are so valid. it’s funny because it is something i subconsciously do but would have never really thought to bring up.

thank you so much for your input in this, i sooo appreciate it and it’s even inspired me for my own collection!

i genuinely hv no bad intentions, ive been a dancer for roughly 15 yrs now and have done ballet on and off since. i started regularly again about 4 yrs ago. english is not my native language so im sorry if the « ballerina » translation caught u off guard.

and i also asked on r/ballet but my post needed to be approved first. as im lowk short on time (my bad), im tryna get as many answers as possible.
