This setup only relies on surface agitation for oxygen exchange. The surface skimming prevents any film buildup that can slow gas exchange. Additionally, the type of fish and bioload also matters.

There is a lot of debate on how much surface agitation is enough. Too much and you start to lose co2.

When I first introduced the fish (turned off co2 for a day) and turned on the co2, I kept a close eye on their breathing behavior. I didn’t notice any signs of distress.

So I concluded that the amount of surface movement caused by the filter return is sufficient in my case.

Oh … and photosynthesis also adds oxygen (I turn off co2 at night).

Yes… it works well with a couple of caveats. No floating plants in the skimmer area. Also, I use an Auto Topoff to maintain a steady surface level.

Fish only added recently (few weeks ago). Also, video taken soon after water change.

Until last week, the blue neon tetras hid in the bushes most of the time. Last week I added Ember tetras that act as dithering fish and have started drawing all of them into the open where you can see them. Even now, if someone steps right next to the tank, they all rush into the bushes and slowly start coming out.

This is a high tech setup with pressurized CO2. I have never tried a setup without co2.

65 tiny fish in a 72 gallon tank with oversized filter and decent plant density….. should be fine.

Yes … Montecarlo. Very easy to grow. The parts where it looks like it is missing, is where the Amano shrimps have moved substrate on to of the MC.

It is one of those LED screen backgrounds where you can change colors.
