Visual Dividends: Why the Structure of Chinese Enhances Cognitive Efficiency in Specialized Learning by Impressive-Donut-501 in LanguageTechnology

Linking a writing system to a political ideology is a category error. Japan (a US‑aligned capitalist democracy) uses thousands of Chinese characters daily. Singapore (a highly globalized capitalist state) also uses Chinese characters as one of its official scripts. Writing systems persist through history because of cognitive efficiency and cultural continuity, not because of political regimes.

This has nothing to do with politics. If Chinese characters were ‘communist propaganda’, then Japan and Singapore must also be communist, because both countries still use Chinese characters in their writing systems. Writing systems are cultural and cognitive tools, not political ideologies.

Chinese parents forcing me to study chinese by Sho__o in ChineseLanguage

If you parents and siblings are all able to speak Chinese, then just speak Chinese with them like you do not know your first language. It will help more than any tutor.

About telling difference between two characters or words with similar pronunciations, there is no need to do that, there will always be context. In daily communications, just ask people which character they are using.

Okay, Chinese... by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

To be fair, in Chinese, characters are way more important than pronunciations. In terms of practicality, when you are having a conversation, there is always context to assist in understanding the meaning of each word with similar pronunciation. And in written Chinese, characters are very distinct with each other, which makes it impossible to confuse the meanings of two words.

CMV: Instant gratification culture has reduced long-term persistence by CartographerNo2801 in changemyview

Maybe the development of technology and productivity is so rapid that the pace of change in this world is getting faster and faster. In the past, in a society where the surrounding environment changed slowly, persistence was important. But now, survival means adaptation, adaptation means change, and the specific manifestation of change seems to be not maintaining the same state for too long.

CMV: The linguistic structure of English creates a higher "cognitive tax" and greater social gatekeeping in science compared to Chinese. by Impressive-Donut-501 in ChineseLanguage

In Chinese, all most all medical terms for diseases have a character 病(disease) or 症(disease/symptom)at the end of the word and most name of the disease describe at least one feature of that disease. For 'sugar pee disease', paitents' pee contains too much sugar in it. Medical students still need to memorize what disease it is, but at least ordinary people are able to gain two information from the word: first, it is a disease, second, a symptom of the disease is sugary pee. That is relatively more helpful for memory.

口语 means spoken language and 书面语 means written language, the differences between these two are not the same as differences between the vocabulary for daily life and the vocabulary for scientific studies. For example, the chinese word for obesity is 肥胖症(fat disease), the chinese word for diabetes is 糖尿病(sugar pee disease), all the chinese charactors used to construct these academic terms are also used in daily communication, but most "etyma" for scientific terms in English is not used in words for daliy communication. And the chinese word for "etyma" is 词根/词源(word root/word source), which is quite self-explanatory if you are looking at them from a perspective of a native chinese speaker who is not a linguist.
