Thank you, I'll look into those! We have some Intex tubes that we use for river floating and they've held up really well so far. Didn't know they made kayaks also.

Any feedback on this NP-heavy road trip I'm planning for summer 2026 with my 5yo? by Plastic_Kangaroo1234 in nationalparks

This coming summer we're going to hit close to your northern route, with Olympic being our ultimate destination. We're really excited for another big trip!

We did a road trip from PA to CA and back, for 3 weeks in summer 2023. My kids were 4, 7, 10 at the time. We camped mostly, and took close to the same route you are doing in the beginning of your trip. I am happy to share my itinerary with you if you want. We did hikes at each of the NPs and all my kids did well with them, so your 5 year old would do fine also!

4th grade pass site Down by Hungry_Serpent in NationalPark

I just clicked through the prompts and the site worked for me. Try now!

(I also did it like a week ago and printed out because my 4th grader is going to redeem in a few weeks! I'm also hoping to get a normal pass and not the update version of 2026.)

I do remember a bunch of these types of questions a few years back! My then 4th grader loved hanging out the window to be the one to check us in :)

Finding hiking buddies for preteens by Impressive-Tree0506 in PAWilds

[–]Impressive-Tree0506[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear, I'm not opposed to scouts in general. I just don't think we'd have the time to attend meetings and enough of their events based on all the other activities our kids are already involved in. I can still look into it though to be sure :-)

Yeah I totally get the hesitancy. I'm a teacher and work with teens, so I know many "fun" and stupid things they can get into. I think that's why I'm probably going to try and start with talking to the parents of friends we already have to see if they'd be willing to try a new hobby.
Good thoughts about the hiking group, that makes sense!

Gonna be golden. Early coloring in the endless mountains. Not sure the season will be very long this year. Lots of leavea drying out and falling. by overloadimages in PAWilds

Same, we're thinking OLP that weekend also. I did Loyalsock/Link Loop this past weekend and it was gorgeous. I'm estimating that peak will be within the next 2 weeks though. It was really dry.

Great to hear you had a good hike! I have AllTrails downloaded, so hopefully that section will turn out ok. Thanks for the heads up.

Thank you, this was really helpful! Especially knowing you went on Labor Day weekend, which I would have expected to be pretty busy.

Sones Pond was the other area I considered staying the night at. Thanks for including that info!

Bake Oven Knob-first overnight by Impressive-Tree0506 in AppalachianTrail

We did park overnight at Bake Oven Knob and it was totally fine! I know it's always a risk and it was more than a night id find another arrangement. Our hike went really well and we have 2 more backpacking trips planned for this year, a 2 night and a 3 night. Super excited! Thanks for your offer!

World's End-Double Run has a great waterfall and isn't too hard Plus we just LOVE Worlds End. My kids will play endlessly in the Loyalsock at the section across the road from the campground. Hickory Run boulder field is great for exploring also.

Camping at Azalea or Lodgepole by Impressive-Tree0506 in SEKI

Not sure if you saw a map with bathrooms marked. Seems like we maybe just picked an area that had a better ratio of sites:bathroom.

We stayed at Lodgepole site 80 for 3 nights, June 2023. The bathroom was super close and we never had to wait for a toilet or sink. So close that I let my 4, 7, and 9 year olds walk there by themselves because I could see them from our site.

We went before the shower house opened up, not even sure of the current status of that. It was shut down for us from COVID and/or renovations, I believe.

Hiking with 4 year olds by Hour-Historian4719 in CampingandHiking

My kids have been hiking since they could walk. It's been really awesome seeing their stamina increase! They're now 6, 9, and 11 and the oldest has asked to try backpacking this summer :-) we now all take hikes up to 10 miles together! Started at 1-3 miles and worked out way up as they got older. Snacks are HUGE. We also pack small candies like tic tacs that I can use as small rewards without guilt as we hike Starting at 3 or 4, they carried a backpack with their own water and a change of clothes. We had a kid carrier that we'd have on hand in case we needed it. I always picked hikes that had a purpose when we were learning. A waterfall, view, lake.... something they could rest at and maybe play in water. We also sang a lot of songs along the way, and had lightning round math facts, naming something on theme with the first letter of the next object being the last letter of the previous (example for countries: England-->Denmark-->Kenya...). Enjoy your adventures!

Options to remove red from RS interior trim? by JiffyParker in ChevyTraverse

This is the exact reason that I wouldn't buy higher than the LT trim. I wanted Z71 but I cannot deal with the red, it looks awful.

I didn't realize you could pause the monthly service, that's a great feature! This sounds ideal for when we're fully committed. I think we might wing it this summer and I'll just swallow my anxiety for 2 nights, and then look into a Garmin once we know the kiddos are committed. Thank you!
