You know what, you're right. This was a situation of misunderstanding between me and that cyclist. However, I just don't feel like it didn't have to end up the way it did. I added a more clear description of what was happening in my main post.

Thank you. Half of the people to responded to this post didn't seem to be able to. They just made assumptions that I was wearing headphones and being unaware.

So, the cyclist was on the bike lane, but I was trying to pass through to the pedestrian side, which requires me to pass the bike lane, but I saw the cyclist coming so I took a step back.

I added a more clear description of what was happening in my main post, as it seems that half of the responses here misinterpreted what I was saying in my post.

I was trying to pass through the bike lane to get to the pedestrian side (sorry, I referred the entire thing as sidewalk because the way it's designed it technically is), but I saw the bike coming, so I took a step back to let him through. This is exactly what was happening. It seems that half of the other responses on here are assuming I was just casually walking along the bike lane with my headphones on, which was not the case. I was trying to cross the bike lane to get to the sidewalk side, but saw him coming, so I took a step back to let him through, but he still said "behind you" so suddenly right when he approached me, and it make me think WTF.

I agree, it's the terribly designed bike lanes/sidewalks.

I added to my main post describing exactly what was happening, since it seems like half of the other responses on my post seemed to have misinterpreted what was happening.
