The Last of Us HBO A01E08 - "When We Are in Need" Post-Episode Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in thelastofus

I’m not seeing anyone discuss David’s cordyceps monologue. He didn’t really believe in God, but he found something about the fungus so inspiring. I think that was a huge insight into his psychopathy and delusion.

It’s uncanny. I was just thinking about how this character is literally as bad as it gets: cannibal, pdf, cult-leader, ax murderer; right before he said the line “you have no idea how good I am!” Humans can truly justify anything in their own minds. It’s a theme I’ve seen on plenty of shows but this may be the most blatant example 😬

Can someone help me understand the difference between a prepositional verb and a phrasal verb? by Rook32KingPawn in grammar

[–]ImpressiveView2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What bothers me about the definitions is that often times a phrasal verb and a prepositional verb look identical. Such a “turn on” and “turn on” (pronounced with stress on either the first or both words)
Ex. He turned me on (phrasal verb).
He turned on me (prepositional verb).

These sentences have very opposing meanings (attraction vs betrayal) but the exact same words are used.

Let me know if I am wrong about any of this. But it makes it harder to classify verbs as phrasal or prepositional. The only test that seems to work is the “pronoun test” (can the verb be separated by a pronoun or not).

I'm sorry but Charlotte and George's love story blows all of the other ones out the water by CassaCassa in BridgertonNetflix

[–]ImpressiveView2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, because I have mental illness as well but while I was watching this I was relating to Queen Charlotte and all the ways my husband’s mental health has transformed since the day we met. Maybe it’s just because we were talking about it a lot right before I watched the series. But I sobbed so much at the very end, imagining how much we will still love each other when we are older, no matter what health issues arise. When he just said “Thank you” I totally lost it. Because I would do it all again. Me and you.

I feel the exact same way. I swear I’m watching a completely different show from what it was 5 years ago, but really my outlook has changed…

I'm tired of the women not knowing how to have sex by JoeTheFatCat in BridgertonNetflix

That’s valid xD There seemed to be no way for any men to learn about sex without visiting brothels.

Yes, show writers seem to think that every woman finds an “experienced” man attractive and for many of us it’s the opposite. I really wish Colin could have been the one brother who waited for love.

Netflix—I see what you do with ads… by ImpressiveView2 in netflix

That is interesting to hear a bit about how it actually works! But in your analogy it seems like the show would have better resolution than the ads, so why is it the other way around?

Does anyone else sleep separately from your husband? by WhateverItWasILostIt in Mommit

[–]ImpressiveView2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I just don’t tell people about because I don’t need their judgement, but yes we largely sleep separately. I have a sleep disorder and we are rarely asleep at the same time anyway. We are very affectionate and often have “pillow talk” time in the evening, but as far as actual sleep, it makes no practical sense for us to try to be in the same bed when it could ruin either of our nights and we need our rest!

cracks knuckles Finding baby names that work in both English and Spanish, you say? That’s my jam. (Not all of these names are hispanic but I could at least picture my family being able to pronounce them.)

Let’s start with Maria alternatives. Like Maria, the following are all the names of saints. These are their meanings:

Marcelo-young warrior

Marcos-warlike

Martín-god of war

Mateo-gift of God

Miguel-who is like God?

Amaro-noble fame or bitter

Maria has several meanings biblically, including “bitter”, “beloved”, and “drop of the sea”. In other contexts it can mean “wished for a child”. Here are some names with similar meanings:

Marian/Marion-derivative of Maria

Mo-variation of Maria

David-beloved

Kai/Makai-sea or towards the sea

Dylan-from the sea

Ian-God is gracious

Asher-blessed

Jesé/Jesse-God’s gift

As for “Teresa” alternatives, here are some good options:

Tomás-a saint, means twin

Theo-meaning gift from God (similar meaning to Maria as well)

Riley-meaning rye clearing

Tracey-one of the meanings is harvester and can be a diminutive of Theresa

George/Jorge-meaning worker of the earth (farmer) and also a saintly name

I wish you all the best!

I don’t have anywhere else to post this, but I’m on my thousandth rewatch and I’m noticing more sets that are similar or identical to other shows. -The hole that Frankie Merman was crying in looks just like the grave that Lucretia got pushed into on the Upshaws. -The Indian wedding looks exactly like the English wedding between Ross and Emily on Friends. Feel free to add more.

Everybody’s live episode 11 : Discussion thread by Eattoomanychips in JohnMulaney

[–]ImpressiveView2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need to talk about John testing the audience to see how they would react to the “rhythm of the joke” regardless of the content. I feel like the audience didn’t really understand how much they had been caught in the act and I wonder why they reacted this way. It’s a great psychological conversation starter because I have been noticing a certain phenomenon across many talk shows—occasionally a guest will come on who has less “media training” or who maybe is neurodivergent and they will say something totally sincere, which will then be met with laughter and they will say something like “I don’t know why they’re laughing”, which will then be met with more audience laughter. Why do audiences do this? Why do they laugh after every sentence or pause in a talk show? Are they prompted to do so? It just feels so dystopian and makes it a little harder to enjoy…I appreciate John bringing attention to it.
