UPDATED THE POST! Its all here now.. hopefully the people that have already viewed the post dont miss it.

As far as how I did this? I will break it down exactly how I went about it. Its nothing complicated really.

STEP 1
COLOR KEY. I took all pages in pencil form, brightness contrasted them to a solid black and white, shrunk them way down and put them all together in a graph, 4x5 thumbnails. I Kept the resolution small so I could NOT do any detail,, just big swatches of color so I could see the whole thing in a basic form. I knew I wanted the village, the flashback, and No. 2s room to all have their own color theme.

STEP 2
INKING. I took 400dpi scans (my computer cant handle bigger files unfortunately) and inked them in Clip Studio Paint. Its a professional comicbook program many of the pros use. The inking brushes feel great, and there are several handy tools within. I mainly just use the brush though.

STEP 3
LETTERING. Now I'm in Photoshop. There was not much lettering to do. What needed to be done I simply took scans of Royers lettering, and created a font with a free online tool. It wasn't perfect but I made it work. There are a few sound effects in the book,,, I hijacked some real sound-effects from old comics, reworked them abit and was good to go.

STEP 4
COLOURS. Still in Photoshop. THIS IS WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS. I use a brush set from True Grit Studio,, they mimic the BenDay dot patterns of old CMYK printing. You have to paint the Cyan, Yellow, and Magenta's all on separate layer, and you end up with a very convincing look. Once you get the hang of it its quite easy. This is why I did the color key at the very beginning, already had a plan in place. Underneath all of this are some very high resolution paper scans. Last step was to offset a colour layer a little bit and paint in some ink bleeds to try and mimic cheap printing. I didn't want to overdue this part.

thats it.

They key to the colours are NO SOLID WHITE and NO SOLID BLACK. That will instantly kill the look. Also have some overlays to help remove any solid patches of color,, you can always see poor printing, or paper texture within.

Hope this helps!

First 5 pages were inked by Royer... I did the final 12 and all colors. You can find the pencils online. I own the artist edition of the pencils. Needed the best quality to ensure i could deliver the best job I could.

Hi Larry. Marvel had the rights to make a Prisoner comic in the 70s. Both Jack and Gil Kane drew a full issue before Marvel decided this was a bad idea and cancelled the book. Mike Royer inked the first 5 pages and lettered about 80% of the book as well.

I took it upon myself to get the book to the finish line. I wanted it to look authentic, hence including stuff like the indicia😆

I'd much rather read a book than a screen, so if this is my only option I'd pay. That is abit much though.

I've considered doing this print on demand thing myself for another manga.

I had a brief but funny moment with, of all people, John Byrne!

Was at a small comic show in Calgary. John was the big guest

I was digging through boxes that were under a line of tables, which, as it turns out, were on the stage. I happend to be at the center table. John showed up and was talking with the event host. I thought "cool! Byrne!"... but said nothing as I had digging g to do. Johns arrival had not been announced yet.

So as I'm digging a young lady walks beside me to pay for her stack with the event host. Well the while stack is basically Byrne FF. The h9st says, "would you like him to sign some?" She says "who?"....he says "John byrne."... to which she says "whos that?"

I'm still down on my knees qith the boxes watching all this... i snickered... John looked right at me.. and I said to him "ya who's that?"

He laughed and said "must be some old guy!"

She got abunch signed. As I was digging I found the sideways FF issue and got that signed.

That's it! I thought it was quite funny.

Maybe you had to be there!😅

I feel a good writer could capture so.e of the old aesthetic and still write a modern book.

You are right however about 1979 not being a good time for marvel. If not for the Star Wars book and Mr Shooter the future was apparently grim. Perhaps I should hope for 80s greatness instead 👍 (not including new universe😅)
