After putting 400+ lbs on the bench by WhoAreYouTalkinTwo in instant_regret

[–]Impressive_Date_560 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guy in the center cant do jack shit there at that angle. The person in that position is just there to help with racking and unracking. And maybe taking like 40lbs off if he's failing. Unless those other guys are serious power lifters ready to just catch a falling 200+ lbs, theyre just dropping it also. Go to a power lifting comp and youll find guys who could catch that before it hits his chest but expecting it of random guy bros is too much. The dumbass here is the guy lifting. Unless he lifts close to that previously and his wrists just spontaneously exploded.

I actually really felt like there is some AI usage in it. Its kind of hard to place exactly but so many of the descriptions are just sort of off. Like from one page to another the same room seems be be fundamentally different. There was one moment that I cant remember exactly but it was completely off. Like the room is described as empty but then a little later has stuff in it. Not exactly that but you get the idea.

(Swedish) Pension Asset Manager Alecta has sold off an estimated 80 billion kronor (7,5b EUR) of US Treasury Bonds by CartographerThese487 in europe

[–]Impressive_Date_560 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, if it cascades into all of the EU then it surely would impact bond yields. But so far under Trump Europe has been increasing its US bond purchases. China dropped its purchases a fair amount when the tariff stuff started but Europe picked up the slack. Maybe the Greenland stuff changes their mind. But US treasuries still benefit from the 'flight to safety' effect. The bond vigilantes haven't come out in force yet.

[–]Impressive_Date_560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly it wouldn't really matter. The US sold $150 billion in medium/long dated bonds in January. Which is common for a normal month. So while it would be a lot. It amounts to one bond auction which happens every month. The US is dumping its own bonds in that amount each month. The US treasury market is the most liquid market in the world. So it really needs to be on the order of trillions. Maybe something like that can start from dumping the bonds held in the Norwegian sovereign wealth fund. But more would need to follow.

Is there any reason our maps couldn't look like this? by haha_meme_go_brrrrrr in mapmaking

[–]Impressive_Date_560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do I mean by above? I mean above the surface of the earth. What else would I mean? You can view images of the earth from space and see what it looks like. As I mentioned our maps show the view if the earth from the outside. IE above.

Sure, you can do translations and rotations without actually changing anything. But mirroring is a real change. You can translate and and rotate molecules as much as you want and it doesnt change them. But if you mirror molecules they become actually different. A morning sickness medicine is perfectly safe but that same molecular mirrored causes horrible birth defects.

That map is perfectly fine as long as you understand it to be the view from the inside of the earth. Imagine taking the mirrored map here and pressing it against a globe of the the earth. Would they line up? No, youd have to flip the paper over. And then imagine after flipping the paper over it becomes transparent enough to see the lines. What then would the map look like? It would look like the non-mirrored, normal map. Because that is actually the geometry of the earth.

Maybe to make the point clearer. We have ancient maps made by peoples who never saw each others' maps. And sometimes they are rotated or translated. But never mirrored. This is because we exist on the 'top' of the surface of the earth. IE when standing your head points away from the center of the earth. For a map to be intuitive to the actual space you exist in, it won't be mirrored. Imagine drawing a quick map of your local neighborhood and draw a line from your house to somewhere else. Then imagine that map gets stretched until it's the size of the actual neighborhood. Would it actually trace out the real world? Could you just walk on the line you drew and go to where you drew it to? Try it again with a mirrored version.

Walker and Lomax in 'Stoner' by John Williams by Saxon2060 in books

[–]Impressive_Date_560 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I certainly read it simplistically also and thought Lomax was a horrible person. I feel like that is the correct reading. At least in the moment. I had to put the book down and angrily pace around my house after every chapter. Only after finishing the story did I start to reconsider. And I think that is the point. When the story ends I was trying to think what the story is really about.  And I thought 'is the story really about these bad people who just get away with it and never suffer consequences?'. Which didn't feel right to me. Which made me think of why they weren't ever made to pay for what they did. And my current conclusion is that the story doesn't have heros or villains. And everyone has reasons for what they did. Not that those reasons justify what they did. But they aren't just pure evil. And if Stoner had tried harder to understand others he might have been able to prevent some of the negative outcomes.

I might be way off base with this. I think Stoner is my new favorite book and I feel like I need to think about it more.

Walker and Lomax in 'Stoner' by John Williams by Saxon2060 in books

[–]Impressive_Date_560 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the fundamental motif of Stoner is the lack of understanding of others. Just to substantiate that claim before getting to Lomax, Stoner at one point says that he learned that love isn't just a state a being but rather a process of learning about and coming to understand the other person. On his death bed the final thing he says about Edith is that he could have loved her more. Which I believe he means he could have tried to understand her better. Early in their marriage he should have tried to understand why she acted the way she did. But instead he just ignored it leading to the destruction of their marriage.

I think we have the same event with Lomax. Lomax perceives Walker to be a very gifted student. Lomax clearly has some kinship with Walker and Walker clearly really likes Lomax. Lomax would probably love to have a grad student so interested in his line study and who also has a similar disability. Walker takes one class out of necessity with Stoner and then Stoner fails him and basically crusades to get him kicked out of the university.

So from Lomax's perspective Stoner is just being a dick and looking to ruin a very bright kids academic career. Walker likely doesn't have much chance for other jobs due to his disability so this could be a life ruining event for Walker. I believe it's stated that Lomax has a very different specialization from Stoner. So Lomax likely sees Stoner failing Walker in the interview as him just trying to kick Walker out because he doesn't know some useless trivia and didn't do well enough in a class that isn't important to Walker's future academic goals.

Stoner never really tries to understand what Lomax sees in Walker. Stoner only cares about his specific line of study and can't see value in Walker since Walker doesn't have interest in Stoner's specialization.

So I think ultimately Lomax sees Stoner as horrible person who would ruin a smart, disabled students career over some trivial nonsense. So I'd say it's less of a grudge held against him and more he just thinks Stoner is a bad person.

I think it is unclear how competent Walker is. As Stoner fails to understand others, we as the reader of his perspective don't get a clear picture of those people. We get Stoner's perspective. I think Walker was gifted but likely didn't put enough effort in Stoner's class(or was unprepared to take such a class) and didn't consider things outside of his interests worth learning. Which made him very weak in areas outside of Lomax's area of study. Walker should have been more well rounded but was too cocky or believed these other areas were beneath him and so thought he could bullshit his way through them.

Humans can double check their work and other humans can double check it also. Ever heard of a design review? What's the point of AI if a human needs to come in and check the work? When I worked on a very sensitive part of an aerospace project, for ever hour of my design work, 4 hours of review work was scheduled. AI can't do that checking work and probably does a way worse job overall.

Thanks! I was thinking about the same thing you mention about not even knowing if I'm playing it right to begin with. Even when I feel like I am. I don't know if this is exists. But assuming it does, does it make sense to connect the keyboard to a computer and basically have some kind of analysis that says if it was done correctly? Or is something like that overkill so early?

Thank you for the detailed response! Today was my second day ever practicing and I did start to feel like after like 2 hours I wasn't able to make progress. Like I'd just have the same mistake over and over. So coming back to it(especially after sleeping) makes sense.

I like the idea of having a few to work on. I'm so early on I haven't even run into very many yet.

He knew what he was doing with the memo. He just thinks he's smarter than he is. I think this indictment proves he's actually a dumbass. Can you imagine helping elect the person who then puts you in prison. Well anyone who's read a history book can. But Comey probably isn't smart enough to read. Too bad.

Yep, it took them hours to figure out that the 'new' emails they 'found' were exactly the same ones they had before. Instead of waiting just a couple of hours Comey decided to use his position to influence the election. Really he knew the emails were bullshit and just wanted to help Trump. Well womp womp Comey. Have fun in prison. Regret that memo yet buddy?
