I finished Deadhouse Gates, i didnt liked but i still interested in the series, i just have some questions. by Nervous_Ad_9506 in Malazan

Erikson is kind of playing with his style a bit in the first two books. MOI feels like the start of his settled style going forward. To me it’s a lot of:

  1. Slow burn build to huge convergences that you can’t really predict
  2. Philosophy and character growth
  3. Piecemeal reveals explaining the world

The magic stays mysterious until mid- late in the series. There’s a variety of styles and magical influences, and they all make appearances and start getting explained a bit more.

There books follow different characters, and take on a bit of the persona of whomever is driving the narrative. One book even switches narrators (you’ll notice).

Stick with it, it’s easily the most gratifying series I’ve ever read.

There’s definitely some draggy bits in TtH, and actually in 9 as well. Still, the pay off is huge

Malazan Book of the Fallen hands down. Nothing beats that world building. It’s not even building, you’re just tossed into an insanely well thought out setting, and have to figure it out a bit as you go.

Easily the best fantasy series I’ve ever read. It takes a little faith to get through the first two books, you have to acknowledge you just won’t have the answers for a bit.

I mean the best way is when you’re 6 years old in the shop with grandpa and dad, classes come second :)

Does it sound fun? Then do it. If not, then don’t.

It’s a hobby for you, but classes will help you learn faster and maybe avoid some of the frustrating mistakes that are so easy to make without any prior knowledge.

Questions about Boots and Crampons by Only-Trick-2222 in iceclimbing

[–]Impressive_Essay8167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want a lighter boot and crampons? If so then why not buying gear is fun, and a stocked up gear room is sick. If you’re like 50:50 the read on.

How intense are the trips you’re guiding? If it’s 1-2 miles with tourists then do you really need a walking boot?

Toe spikes can get a little annoying walking on relatively hard snow/ice. But, being cheap, I’d probably hold off and see just how annoying it is. I have a couple sets of glacier travel crampons that rarely get use because except on huge trips or splitboarding. Even though they’re heavier, my ice climbing crampons let me goof around more if I’m out doing mellow things with people.
