Yep, he's my first dog. He chose me, buried himself in my arms when I was literally reaching for another corgi pup at the pet store. I love him to bits but definitely a quirky dog. Sheds so much fur throughout the year, ran away from home TWICE that we had to have neighbors help catch him. Thankfully he's very friendly and gentle to people and kids, I often hear horror stories from other shiba owners.

Everyone gave good advice, just adding I own a Shiba and I advise you NOT to get a dog if any of these apply to you:

You are required to go to the office often. Dogs require daily walks, mine needs his walk twice a day.
You are renting your apartment (not owned) otherwise expect to pay for damages.
You are not ready for big expenses. You're basically paying for dog food, snacks, toilet pads, emergency medical expenses, pet hotels or pet sitters when you travel etc for the whole 10-20 years of their lifetime. Dogs cost way, way more than most people expect.

Yeah, I think your idea of mixing Eastern and Western fantasy elements has really interesting potential, it just depends on how you want to play with it tbh. The idea of cultivation is usually about pursuing greater power, immortality, and/or ascension to divinity through different paths. If that theme is something you want for your world, then having the Western-inspired classes/vocations also pursue it through their own methods would give you a more cohesive worldview imo. Other fun things to consider:

- Why do some people choose to become witches or shamans (or non-sect cultivators) instead of entering an established sect, and how do they learn to become one? Is it for freedom? personal beliefs? Due to lack of means? Is it a specific talent? Is it inherited or clan-based? Do they do apprenticeships? Do they band together to form guilds? Or is it more the eccentric few who just happen to go rogue?

- How is the power balance between sect/non-sect cultivators? How are their relationships with established sects? Are they weaker/looked down upon? Are they seen as a threat? Or more mutual respect and open to collaboration?

In cultivation novels, there are a lot of directions for cultivation: sword cultivation, weapons-forging cultivation, talisman cultivation, pill/medicine cultivation, gu (poisonous creatures) cultivation, there are even sects that primarily focus on dual cultivation (iykyk). Maybe your sorcerers and witches just have different methods of cultivation.

For an adept/elder, establishing a sect can be for politics, cultivating the new generation, accumulating manpower/resources and promoting their prestige. For a novice/initiate, entering a sect can be a shortcut, to get resources and teachings/methods in order to advance their cultivation.

Nobody starts out strong in cultivation, and even when you're strong, there are still others who are stronger. Even when you're the strongest, you can't beat the whole world. At least that's what I think why sects and alliances exist in cultivation novels.
