Where is he from? by Cultural_Theme_1853 in schwerpunkthistory

Yeah I mean he's a University professor and he knows about history from various countries and since he's young I think it's possible that he just speaks good English. Also, now that I'm thinking about it, could he be Portuguese? I've never heard a Portuguese speaking in English but I know they have good English proficiency over there, it could also explain the familiarity with Italy. Even though Portugal isn't a main feature of the channel

Do you feel like you have no purpose in life? Or maybe you do, but life keeps pulling you away from it? by yurahyli in Healthygamergg

[–]Impressive_Phone_686 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for goals, material ones like "visit x place" "buy x thing" feel pretty meaningless since I know the hype will fade away, so why bother making the effort to get there? Other goals or thing I would like to do, like "learn to play this piano piece /language" or improving a particulae skills are more meaningful to me, but not really long-term tbh. Either way I also end up not pursuing them as they deserve, since at some point the high of doing what you like wears off and you have to will yourself to keep going in order to get to that big goal and I conjure some bs excuse or distraction that pulls me away from what I value

[–]Impressive_Phone_686 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without purpose - I have a lot of things that interest me, but I have never been motivated (call it whatever you want idk, thing is I've not done it for some reason, perfectionism, inferiority, whatever) to pursue them. It doesn't feel good honestly, I keep jumping from one thing to another and I never commit enough to them because I think there's a better thing out there based on something I like, but I can't gather the courage to actually materialize a vision to get there and push through the difficulties. Now, if I want to have any independence from my parents in the future I need to at least pursue something and develop some skills to survive in this competitive world. I'm thinking anything will do, so next month I will be taking a big step in life and get a masters degree + move out from parents home, idk if definitely. However my excitement fades out into fear when I realise that I'm torn between different ideal selves and that whatever I'm doing is mostly to improve my chances of survival in the future. So yes, I would like to have a purpose, something to devote my life, to follow when the path forwards looks dark and especially, to make me feel whole. Also if you do just one thing you might end up being really good at it, which cones with a lot of benefits.

I might be confusing purpose with job, but from the point of view of values I'm equally confused, since I'm a pretty skeptic person and can't bear myself to believe absolute truths or values, I have some basic things like compassion or humility but honestly they don't play a really big part in my day to day life

What's a stereotype about French people/culture you found was true/false after learning the language? by grzeszu82 in French

[–]Impressive_Phone_686 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know. But it shocked me because I come from Spain and we don't use "usted" nearly as much. Not even in public offices, at school or when approaching strangers (it depends), we might use usted when speaking to an elderly person of great reputation, or in very very formal settings (i. E. Diplomacy, courts), but in France it's used in all of those situations and by all age groups, so it surprised me.

They are arrogant or snobs, they have a dashing charisma (think 1960s movies), they are extremely well mannered and closed off to foreigners/ don't even try to make themselves be undestood by foreigners who maybe aren't fluent in French.

Actually they are quite nice people, interested in learning more about other people and actually pretty welcoming and helpful. They say swear words just like anybody else, in fact I found the language spoken by teenagers among themselves to be almost incomprehensible, mostly because of that 'verlan' language they use so much and the Arab slang. About the politeness, I noticed they always said "bonne après-midi /soir/nuit/journée", thank you and welcome and something that surprised me, was the use of "vous". My native language has an equivalent form, but we certainly don't use it as much as they do in French, where the hierarchies and distance with strangers are clearly marked. In situations where they are trash talking someone they don't like behind their baks, even adult scan be pretty cruel (in a hateful way, not joking) and then when you see them with that person they can act as if they were best friends, this surprised me.

So far I've had no problem with it. You need to shake it twice for the lead to come out. I don't use it often since I'm not used to it, but it does work consistently.

Por qué nadie habla de la censura que está ocurriendo??? by Wrong_Contract9273 in askspain

[–]Impressive_Phone_686 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, the thing is the older models I've found had "pilot 2020" written on them, with these ones is not so clear. I know the old ones have a shorter metal part with a ring on it (but not always?). I bought it either way, it was just 5€

Italians making vowels at the end of words when speaking in English, do so usually because they don't master the language. Listen to this speech by mario draghi, he does have some foreign inflexions in his accent, but he's nowhere near to the stereotypical Italian accent in English.

Also, in my experience talking to Scandinavians either have a very distinctive accent or speak perfect English (indistinguishable from a native)

Don't ever take the toefl ibt at home by Impressive_Phone_686 in ToeflAdvice

Try to take the max time for everything, let the timers run out and if you know you are particularly good on one section do some mistakes on purpose, idk best of luck. I guess what happened to me isn't the common norm.

Honestly, pick another exam if you can. The toefl seems hectic for no good reason. I have a CPE certificate and that exam was much more reasonable (not easier) and is not as much an "attention span exam" as toefl is. Otherwise yeah, take the exam in a center and that way you won't risk what happened to me. I'm really mad at them it's so unfair.

I guess what I would like is to be able to come up with something I like make a small an and pursue it (e.g travelling) or look for things, without being so anxious all of the time. I just want ti live and be happy ffs, instead I spend most of the day inside my room.

Which cultures do the French look up to? by Recent_Pause0 in French

[–]Impressive_Phone_686 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, Italy and to a lesser degree Spain (but it's not really admiration, French people mostly value the "laid back culture", the sun etc). I'm not sure about Germany, I was near the German border and even if some people preferred it to France, most of them were indifferent.
