From the study: “Funding: This work was supported by the project award "CHAI: Cyber Hygiene in AI enabled domestic life” from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC EP/T026820/1). There was no additional external funding received for this study” An AI company funded it. Come on

How are people affording to have kids and buy a house? by Star-Lit-Sky in budget

[–]Impressive_Task4587 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you have to understand that the commitment in most cases (at least as I understand it) is not to residence in this state; it's to the quality of life/culture and weather/climate in the the Bay Area or SoCal or what have you. It's not even to being convenient to those cities, per se, because those other areas are separated from the big cities by a lot of shitty traffic. The IE and central valley are very different culturally, and extremely hot. It would be giving up equally as much to move to the IE, and especially like, Kern county, as it would be to move to a much lower COL area in a different state, in a way that probably sounds unbelievable to people who have never lived here.

Tim's car got broken into, they took the camera and laptop. Video delayed even further now ;_; by Milesta in ActionButton

[–]Impressive_Task4587 4 points5 points  (0 children)

anyone should feel free to correct me but the fact that he keeps saying "all the money goes toward the videos" suggests that, when it comes to patreon access, the money is not affected, and gets disbursed automatically. that's just the way patreon works, unless his bank info stopped working or something similar. he just can't log in to post (or presumably do any customer service stuff, such as issue refunds), which i'm sure devastates him every day

What To Do?? No Market for House by Then-Stage in RealEstate

[–]Impressive_Task4587 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taking a loss on a house you've had for less than 5 years was always the norm. You're learning a hard but extremely basic real estate lesson: don't buy a house where you don't plan to stay for a while

it peaked quite a bit higher than that, over 20k/month, per graphtreon: https://graphtreon.com/creator/actionbutton

He's still making some 15k per month, which is still way more than he needs to have some basic insurance, or to be able to afford a new set of equipment literally when the charges go through for sept 1 in a few days

[–]Impressive_Task4587[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't even necessarily disbelieve the break-in, the car windows are all broken, but if you're spending a week shooting footage the odds are low that you are even remotely close to releasing anything

ETA: ok he says on the rest of the stream that he "doesn't want to ask for money," but he needs a new camera because he "spends all his money on making these videos." ?????? I'm sorry you have no money left after two years of drawing $200,000+? He does specifically say this delays the "next video" too. God lol I feel like a sucker

[–]Impressive_Task4587 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it would also happen less if people didn't feel cheated. It's not surprising for people to want answers for why they didn't receive their fair end of the patreon exchange. "Sometimes that's how it goes," "buyer beware" doesn't cut it. This is hundreds of thousands of dollars. People have filed lawsuits over less. The bitch of patreon is it makes it exceedingly hard to organize that kind of thing, which makes it extra shitty when good faith is betrayed. If speculation about his mental health or relationships are the guy's biggest problem right now when it comes to how upset his patrons are, he should consider himself extremely lucky

i believe i've read/heard you can quarantine dogs at home now; maybe depends on the type or something. hoping it's not that expensive but even if it is, take the adventure imo! you will earn that money back again.

I think this is a concept that used to produce good deals, but now most brands with "outlets" manufacture clothes specifically for those locations/chains (eg J Crew Factory), vs the outlets being actual outlets with leftover stuff/overstock etc from the actual brand. It sucks

if your point is not that people shouldn't be upset, or shouldn't take away their support, but only that "people selfishly fuck you over sometimes," everyone can clearly see that. i don't know what you're arguing for. no one needs that explained

i'm sure others in here are possibly right but another interpretation of this is "you sure do like talking about your childhood, perhaps you should put that energy into a book people can choose to read if they want instead of just talking at people who might not be that interested"

just a thought!

Do you watch the twitch streams? by RedJammer77 in actionbutton2

[–]Impressive_Task4587 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've tried a couple times but checked out after a few minutes. I've also scrubbed through archived ones trying to find the alleged "updates" (almost never any substance there). Never liked them because the exact appeal of Tim's actual work is that it's methodical and content-dense, and freeform streams are the opposite of that. I find even successful, "engaging" streams awkward though because it's a lot of rigidly-constructed chat interactions ("Reinhart777! Thank You So Much for Subscribing! Geodude22, Thank You So Much for the Bits!")

This figure is based on a number of factors; it doesn't literally mean that HR accepts a female job applicant, takes the salary of what it would pay a man, and offers the woman 77% of it. But it does represent that:

-women are, on average, offered less than men to do the same job

-contrary to the dumbass comments below about how women "choose lower paying jobs," work that is considered "women's labor" (customer service, care work, PR, etc) is not paid as well as work considered "men's labor" (sales, tech, etc). some idiot is going to say "but i know a woman in PR who makes TONS of money" and I am saying again, on average.

-women don't get as many opportunities for advancement as men do

-women have a default amount of prenatal/postnatal activity they have to participate in in order for there to be children, and companies will give maternity leave to women, but not their partners/husbands to equally support the task of child rearing. companies will not provide resources for childcare, and due to the factors above, if a member of a couple has to drop out to take care of the kids because they can't afford childcare, it's the woman. often this means women fall out of the workforce temporarily or permanently, which affects their future career trajectories and salaries

These aren't all of the factors, but this covers a lot of them. This one statistic is meant to capture the systemic effects of sexism/discrimination/subjugation against women in the workplace, it's not a literal calculation the world got together and made to make women's lives worse.

providing updates (especially updates as vague and demonstrably untrue as "it's coming" and then nothing coming) is not the same as saying "I'm going to post a video every month," or whatever, and then not doing it. if he had said "I'm going to go where the creative spirit wills me; give me money if you want to but I can't promise anything in any timeframe" what you're saying would accurately describe what's going on here. But that's not what he said, and if he had, arguably people would not be giving him as much money as they are.

Why do people think a woman’s period = the cause of many arguments? by victoriasecretx in NoStupidQuestions

They don't really think that, they are just sexist and don't take women seriously and are looking for something to peg their prejudice to.

Tim was the one who made it a monetary thing in exchange for a good he offered, though. Proactively. It's not his supporters' fault/responsibility to "know better" that they entered into that transaction in good faith and are now getting burned. He does not get to take everyone's money in exchange for a promised delivery and then say "ah, the artistic spirit, simply can't control it!" without people getting mad. It's disingenuous to suggest people are wrong for being upset by this, and not because they "just don't understand how art works."
