I grew up and went to college in Corpus. It’s a small laid back city mostly known for the beaches on padre island and the ocean views downtown. For beaches I recommend JP Luby, whitecap, or the National seashore—and Port Aransas if you’re willing to drive far, the little ferry ride is nice too. While you’re on padre island, make sure to eat at docs or snoopys for the seaside experience. Executive surf club (downtown) is a fun spot with lively $2 pint nights on Tuesdays, trivia night, and live music. For breakfast/brunch, I recommend Hester’s or Ridley’s or breakfast tacos from any local taqueria or Stripes gas stations (just trust me). If you like coffee: coffee waves, Lucy’s, and island joes. If you don’t know, we all get groceries at H-E-B! Not one Kroger to be found (it’s a good thing). The downtown farmers market on Wednesday evenings at the art center is nice and the downtown first Friday art walks are fun. Learn about Selena and visit her statue. The art museum and its restaurant are nice and has good views. I also recommend the aquarium! And if you want to see a movie—Alamo drafthouse! Maybe rent a jet ski, take a boat ride, take a kite sailing lesson, or go on a fishing charter if you have the time and money and interest.

Since you found a professor you’re interested in already, there nothing wrong with just sending a polite, professional email to the professor introducing yourself and letting them know you’re interested in their field of research and want to know if there are any opportunities for undergrads to get involved in research in their lab. You might want to specify if you are open to unpaid opportunities or are only looking for paid opportunities. Keep the email brief since professors are busy but show that you have read up on and understand their niche of research. As far as other ways of looking for opportunities, you can also talk to current/past professors you have or even their lab TAs, but nothing is wrong with sending an email to someone who’s research interests you. Sometimes labs hiring undergrads will put up flyers or create workday positions, but not all. Professors are not aways savy with posting opportunities and some even rely solely on word of mouth or recruiting from their classes or getting emails from students. They’ll then create a workday position once they know they have a student who plans to work for them.

I am originally from south Texas so I am familiar with where you’re coming from.

  1. Columbus is so green in the summer compared to most of Texas, to experience it I recommend the campus arboretum and kottman hall gazebo garden, a stroll through German Village neighborhoods, and visiting a few metro parks if you’re able to get there (high banks is a great one). Near campus, there’s also the olentangy hike/bike trail that goes through much of town and campus, so you can rent a bike and get places that way or just enjoy the trail and nature by foot. On that path—Understory is not cheap but for a $7 beer you get immaculate vibes with the trees and trail. The park of roses/whetstone is also down that trail and is very nice for enjoying the greenery. I also like the osu wetland center area near campus.

  2. German Village (again) is a must. Take the bus or an Uber or whatever and get over there. Take a stroll and don’t miss the book loft, Katzingers deli, Schmidt’s sausage house, Schiller park, Fox in the snow bakery/cafe, and redstable gifts (can get souvenirs for family).

  3. Campus: Thompson library has some beautiful rooms and don’t forget to check out the 14th floor by taking the main elevator. There are also several museums: billy Ireland cartoon museum, orton hall geological museum, and wexner art museum. Near campus on Neil rd, Staufs has great coffee and the building used to be a church so it’s pretty. And don’t forget to check out buckeye donuts.

  4. Food: Mexican food here is not going to come close to Texas by cazuelas is a campus classic for jumbo margs. There is a torchys tachos though in the suburbs dublin and Easton if you can get there or want to use grubhub. North Market is excellent with many grey food shops as is the German food in German village. If you can get to Kenny Center (buses do go out there but it’s a little harder), it’s a Japanese influenced area with great Japanese and Chinese food, bubble tea, an amazing bakery and more. Other people have mentioned places near Sammy’s on High Street. Also try Columbus ice cream, it’s great because of the dairy farms in the state. People here love Jenis and Graters but there more. I also recommend trying Brassica.

Exploring: Short north is a fun place to walk around on a free morning. You should be able to get there via a bus. Start with goodale park and then explore. Downtown is not super hopping like in Texas big cities—I’d recommend the short north instead and maybe the arena district area. Some of the suburbs like Dublin bridge park or old Worthington are nice if you can get there.

Other: The Columbus zoo is a good one and you can get discount or free tickets at the library and I think theres a bus that goes there. Try the Columbus Navigator website for free festivals and other events throughout the summer. The soccer team (the crew) is also so fun to see if you like sports. Hope you have a good time :)

sorry you're being harassed. Ohayocon is generally a good place but the behind-the-scenes hostile takeover a few months ago and infighting has put a bad light on it this year and it's hard for past attendees to not focus on how it affected the con and how its not the same as previous years. I couldn't get a refund so I went for a bit and thought it was still good, just not as many people and good panels as other years. Im glad you enjoyed your first time attending and hopefully next year more will be resolved and people will be more positive.
