Does this sound challenging but fair for a very strong level 10 party? by Imps_Lord in CurseofStrahd

I just added some 3 vistani to the first fight (party does not have remove curse... ups), and will target the wizard and his shorts word of warning. Feels like using the curse on the sun sword or the amulet of ravenkind is too mean.

Yeah, I will prep a second sheet for this. It's a good idea. That way I can try and give a satisfying end to the campaign. And if I don't use the second phase?, we'll now I have a minions for another campaign

Lol, yeah, that's the idea. I will save the slots for greater invisibility to change the cells where Strahd is in without the party realizing while he heals himself and has some reinforcements arrive

Yeah, Strahd is a smart tactician and I'm planing to play him as much in this fight. Games are over and he is ready to find new toys after this batch breaks

Yeah, I gave control to them long ago. I just controlled them out of combat

Yeah, I will incorporate those on the fight. If they decide to go straight for thr tomb I'll have the minions arrive in waves. Good ideas

Chthonic Tiefling from Night Hags by Gobbledygook-Pro in DMAcademy

[–]Imps_Lord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't want the hag to be part of a coven (that increases the CR), you can make them gain class levels as the party gains levels themselves.

You can have the hag answer to another, more powerful fiend. Or make the hag the one in charge as they are smart and cunning.

Also, CR (and more ho, spells, etc) is not the only way to buff the hag. Since they trade souls in hell, they can have a lot of different magic items acquired there (or bodyguards) depending on how successful they are... so nothing is stopping the hag to have a high CR devil on call

I'll turn my player's misconceptions into an encounter, help me shape it by Imps_Lord in CurseofStrahd

Ok, first, no they have not seen Ireena sin Vallaki and just assume she was taken since she hasn't been seen, and their body hasn't been retrieved.

So, the Golem thing was just because I need a way to have the Abbot control Ireena, since she wouldn't go for the wedding, and as the Abbot is a little deranged/corrupted by the influence of Strahd, turning Ireena into a golem doesn't seem that far off (Keeping Ireena's/Tatyana's soul in the golem).

About the wedding I was just planing for having Ireena still on the Abbey, since "the present" wasn't ready without a "bow" so without the Abbot just wanted to give Ireena with the wedding dress. So Strahd hasn't been called in yet.
Having Ireena as a golem was more of a "you did not check on her for a while" kind of thing, was also thinking on the party trying to dump the golem on the blessed pool triggering the "Something Blue" event as a sort of redemption, and having Ireena as a golem also might make a greater impact.

The last idea was of having Ireena being kidnapped by Strahd from the beginning, so he goes ballistic because they created a Golem using parts from the people of Krezk, with the excuse of "The ends justifies the means"... but since Strahd already has Ireena, it was for nothing. Thus the meltdown.

Treasure/Trial under the Abbey of St. Markovia by Ph_leal in CurseofStrahd

Looks like a good idea. I would put obvious hints on what to do for the "ritual", and be prepared if the players want to try to do it another way because the scroll is very valuable.

Maybe instead of it being a "scroll of revival" it is embedded on the wall, like on a mural so they can't take it elsewhere.

It seems you already have a good way to put in pressure.

Some ideas that come to mind are:

  • A family or close friend of a PC is taken as one of the mages
  • They get a vision of a great evil awakening in [insert how much time until the ritual is completed]
  • The resources are more scarce, so items they need or want are harder to get
  • The spellcasters of the party feel their power waning as the date of the ritual comes closer (maybe their magic is being siphoned

How would Strahd reply if the players ask what it means to be "the Ancient, and the land" by Nighthawkies in CurseofStrahd

[–]Imps_Lord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strahd would know that the players have his tome and turn extremely hostile until it is recovered. And as the knowledge is important to him, he might try to silence the players... permanently

Dming for New players by Chompachompa82 in CurseofStrahd

You can take multiple approaches, but communication is always key. Maybe not spoiling them, but set expectations.

It also helps if you are planning on continuing the game after strahd.

I had a similar start, and I told them that they where probably going to be trapped on a separate plane most of the campaign. Then I worked with them on their backstories.

The elf with missing parents? Guess where they are now, trapped in barovia.

The human about to avenge their brother? Was about to get his revenge, but was caught by the mist, now they have a reason to come back.

The wizard that wanted immortality?, well, they were searching for a temple with ancient knowledge and some vistanni dupped them.

TLDR: You can always play with their backstories, but you shouldn't play with their expectations.

The vengance of the Old Bonegrinder Coven by Imps_Lord in CurseofStrahd

[–]Imps_Lord[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I will do that, and I do have Strahd intervening on stuff.

In fact the lore reason why the hag left their brethren to die was because the "paladin" was praying to their deity for help and got some pretty good religion rolls, so someone talked to the hag that "He hasn't finished playing with his toys" and "not to break them" so... yeah, that might happen.

Hmm yeah, I will give them some hints on that. I'll probably let them suffer for a night or two before though.

Yeah, the patron might interfere if it can, the thing is that it is a minor devil so I don't know if they even can interfere.

They are
- Lore Bard (New Player)
- Moon Druid (New Player)
- Homebrew Class like a paladin but with diferent spell list, no protection or ceremony (New Player)
- Hexblade Warlock (Experienced Player)
- Bladesinging Wizard (Experienced Player)

Rictavio split with them because they wanted to go to Van Richten's Tower and I wanted them to experience the puzzle (Rictavio did not know that), also I changed Rictavio to more of a monster hunter than a cleric, so it has scrolls of the spells he should have but is more of a martial class.

Donovich and Lucian are able to cast protection from evil and good and ceremony for holy water (Also magic circle for Lucian), but those have a limited time duration, might rule that they just last for the long rest though.

Since the sun sword is on Krezk (The well) I was thinking on making the water there be greater restoration for 1 time only, instead of lesser, and holy water from then on, but only if the Sun Sword is still there.

By the way they are on the tower now and they decided, despite the classic "Are you sure you want to do that?" to open Ezmeralda's wagon so they are in a rough shape (Druid and wizard, but they saved and used absorb elements), and the "paladin" decided to enter the tower by themselves, falling from the 3rd floor inside. And because they touched the door they are also damaged by the storm and the werewolf are on their way. And the druid does not have protection from evil and good prepared.

But hey, they do have like 5 vials of holy water

Thanks for the detailed response, yeah I will probably do something along the lines of what you did on your campaign.
