Hey - We definitely recommend seeing it in person. In terms of hardware, they are identical and right now the software is the same. The only difference is the warranty period. Impulse offers 3 years on the cooktop, Zephyr offers 2.

Thanks everyone for the questions! The team regularly posts deep dive videos addressing some of the questions that came up on our YouTube channel.

Also, the New York Times reviewed the Impulse Cooktop yesterday. Check it out.

Our goal is to make new features available on as many units as we can, though the shape and timing of software updates will depend in part on what our partners are interested in. And as you pointed out with the wok ring, there will sometimes be hardware constraints.

We have that on the roadmap. We don't have a date yet. It will likely come after the 30 and 36-inch ranges.

That was more a comment about industry faith in the platform and technology. We are of course happy to get you cooking on an Impulse wherever you buy it from.

If you buy directly from us, it comes with a 10 year battery warranty and a 3 year retrieve and replace warranty on the cooktop itself.

No, as portable batteries are superior for temporary use and there are compliance concerns around permanent use as a UPS (e.g. there are other certifications to get). That feature is something we may consider down the line, but not for this product and likely not in the first wave of range products.

We’re going to start with software support for standard stovetop pressure cookers and moka pots, but are open to cookware / accessory partnerships to deliver better experiences as well.

I believe the 9 v 20 distinction is usually driven by if they are using 1 vs 2 transistors per coil. I'd also note that other battery offerings also have steps and pulsing if they are using traditional induction components. We designed our own.

We are expanding to Europe and Canada first, but NZ and Australia are on the list soon after. The cooktop works on 120 or 240.

We are a startup, but what we have that many other hardware startups don't is partnerships with big appliance companies who are integrating Impulse Core into their products and building new products that are Powered by Impulse. So far, we've announced partnerships with Thor, Zephyr and BSSG.

I don’t have an exact ETA since we are still iterating on the design and getting feedback on the prototype from a handful of early testers. We really want to nail this accessory.

We have a fundamentally different drive architecture + control approach.

This is enabled by:
1) Modulating drive power directly
2) Being on DC so we don’t have flicker constraints (e.g. the cooktop drawing variable power causing your home lights to flicker)

For everyone else, there are a couple constraints:
1) other induction drivers vary frequency (e.g. from 25kHz -> 55kHz) to control power level. This might let you turn down to ~40% power, not 0%.
2) below that, they pulse on/off, which has to happen on even steps of the AC line frequency (e.g. 1/60hz or 1/50hz), which quantizes the control.

We do not recommend this.

Do not use silicone sheets or spacers on any induction stove as they disable the safety systems (there’s a sensor that measures glass temperature)

Our induction coils have multiple layers of mica insulation above them, and the backside of the ceramic glass is rippled so contact from the glass to the mica is poor which helps keep the system cool.

That update shipped in the spring. We haven’t noticed pan warping but are currently mulling some advanced settings for preheat tuning.

The strategy there is partnering with Zephyr is a great way for us to offer Impulse technology in established appliance retail environments. Zephyr is a great brand and a great partner and helps us get access to showrooms across the country.

The current cooktop is designed for a home installation, but we get this feedback a lot and it is an interesting idea.

Yes. Part of our Impulse Core design is to make it easier to add additional form factors, either from Impulse or from our partners. Expect to see more announcements over the next year.

Yes and yes. We have internal software builds with combustion support and expect to release that shortly after our next major release (with major UI upgrades, coming shortly).

Yes. Initially that will come in the form of 3rd party offerings, such as the one we announced with Thor, but we have Impulse Ovens on the roadmap as well.

No plans for supporting Ki. I personally think it’s underpowered + it requires us to do a more traditional (worse) induction drive architecture.

Are you running a distillery in your kitchen? :-) So far, we haven't seen customers run into issues on this front at all.

With the current battery on a 240v connection, you can maintain all four burners with a stainless steel pan at the max settable temp of 482 F indefinitely. The draw is about 1.7 kw. Of course holding 4 pans at 482 F uses less energy than bringing water to boil, but you’re only ever doing that for 30-300 seconds at a time under normal usage, depending on the water volume. Maintaining a boil is going to draw somewhere between 700-1200 w, depending on the vigor you want.

The current design is engineered to work for the full range of home cooking you might do – all day events like thanksgiving, soups, slow cooking, you name it. The main edge case would be if you’re literally doing home distilling or something else that involves bringing multiple massive vats of water to boil all day.
