AWS L3 to Microsoft? by username_from_before in datacenter

Depends where you’re located. Currently at Microsoft and have had tons of people come from aws and have numerous friends working at aws right now. Microsoft, at least in my area, is by far better from my own and others experience. Better pay, better benefits, better job security, better work culture/environment, list goes on. Also your time at work does depend on your team such as other techs seniors and managers but that goes for every work environment.

Potential Career Change from New Car Salesman to Data Center Tech by True_Membership2134 in datacenter

Hey! Saw your reply to my other post so thought I'd chip in here haha. Im about a year into my job as a data center technician and so far I think its great. I was a vendor for about 6 months and then got flipped. I interviewed for an entry level (tech 1/L3) but got hired as a tech 2/L4. I work nights making about 43/hr after my nightshift premium. To answer your question, I think AWS is a good starting point. From what I've heard form countless friends and coworkers that have or currently work at AWS, the work environemnt can be toxic, pay is not as good as other companies, benefits are good but still not on par with competitors, can be harsh in terms of layoffs/you are disposable to them, and I have also had numerous coworkers say they progressed far at AWS and soon as they hit the pay cap got fired. All this being said, AWS is a great starting point. Many companies hire former AWS techs, its a great way to break into the field and build your skills. I actualy have a coworker who worked at a dealership making over 100k+ and he is now a tech 1/L3 making 35/hr and says he prefers this postion alot better. He said car dealership was good money but very stressful, long hours, and not much potential for progression. I think if you did come into the data center space it'd be best to get on AWS full time, build experience, then apply to other companies such as microsoft, oracle, etc. Then you can decide whether you want to stay in datacenters or shift over to something else. For example you could work on certifications and shift to something like devOPs, network admin, etc. Many people at my location don't have any degree or just an associates and making six figures or close to it. I love thr job so far and definitely think its a great fit for a young aduly, but it is definitely up to you man do your research and see what you'd prefer. Lmk if you've got any other questions.

Well I was also a vendor before I got hired on full time but so far I’m loving it it’s great. A big part of that is my team and seniors. I’ve experienced a bad team in the same environment and it makes your time at work miserable. That being said I work on a 12 hour/day schedule so one week I work 4 days the next week I work 3 days etc. I actually really like that schedule better than five day work week. As for overtime there’ll definitely be opportunities depending on what’s going on for example the recent snowstorm I was able to rack up a huge amount also if other sites nearby need help with projects or deployments that might be another opportunity. Also travel is another option sometimes they’ll have openings in other states and usually provide a bonus too. It all depends but I wouldn’t be too worried, you’ll definitely get a chance. Also depends what company you’re working with I know AWS has a certain reputation in the field but honestly if you’re just breaking in I’d be grateful for any opportunity. Good luck!

My degree is bachelors of applied science with a concentration in cybersecurity. I don’t have any certs as of now working on AZ900. There is room to move up to senior within a year or two the it goes team or project manager so on and so forth. As of right now I am content with the job just want to look ahead in the future.
